Yesterday being the 14th of December, The University of Port Harcourt celebrated her maiden Agriculture Day , sitted at full capacity at the Convocation Arena of the University were the students of the University.
In honour of the occasion was the
°The Vice Chancellor and His Deputy Vice Chancellor Adminstrative
°Commissioner of Agriculture, Rivers State.
°Dean , Faculty of Agriculture. University of Port Harcourt
°Agriprenuers and Investors.
It was a day of enlightenment for the students of University of Port Harcourt, we were taught on how to create a niche for ourselves in Agriculture by thinking outside the box and creating solutions to the needs in the sector.
For example,
Production sector and Marketing sector: The rate of importation in Nigeria is much, if we produce more we can actually reduce the rate of importation. Going into the following production will help
°Wheat production
°Rice production
°Tomato paste production
°Fish feed production
°Egg production.
Some exhibition work of Crop and Soil Department, and Fisheries
Youth Involvement is highly impactful in this sector because as leaders of tomorrow we are the next generation to create and implement the change we desire.
Fundamental truths to get before going into this practice
°Passion
°Knowledge of the sector
°A level of experience
°Creating a brand
°Define your consumer
°Financial Discipline
Agriculture sector has the capacity to elevate poverty in any nation so therefore should be taken seriously,
Two keypoints the Vc pointed out on the benefit of the sector,
°It can cause Food security in the nation
°It can also reduce social vices.
Despite the many benefits of the sector it has some challenges for starters
°Lack of means to raise capital
°Lack of mentorship platforms
°Micro and Macro economic policies
°Competition.
