Although I am a fan of many types of music, it's pretty safe to say that in the past decade I have probably not kept up to speed with the alternative genre. For the most part I have been listening to a lot of country and mostly older stuff since that is kind of where I find comfort.
That all started to change a short time ago when my niece started becoming more interested in music. I bought her first record player a little bit ago and since then we have been sharing different bands who interest us. While her older sister shares my love for country music, she is more into Hip Hop, R&B, and alternative music.
I do my best to share some of my old favorites with her, like Fleetwood Mac for example. I bought her a copy of "Rumors" because in my opinion everyone should own a copy of Rumors. In return for me sharing my "oldies", she shares some of the people that she has been listening to.

Spotify does this cool thing where if you listen to a single album (by anyone) and that album finishes, it starts playing similar songs that you might like. That in addition to listening to Alt Nation on Sirius/XM during our recent trip to Ohio is how I discovered most of these artists.
So here we go!
Noah Kahan has actually started to get a lot of traction lately. I hadn't really heard of him before, but he has a style and sound that I find really enjoyable. I have a friend that recently went to the Bourbon and Beyond Festival in Louisville, KY and Noah was one of the headliners there. He made a post on Facebook about how all the young ladies in the audience were going crazy for Noah and they knew the words to pretty much every song.
I find it interesting that the word Alternative can cover such a broad spectrum of music these days. Everything from the coffee house singer songwriter vibe to more electric obscure stuff like I will share here in a little bit.
This song is really moving. I've heard this song a ton of times, but I don't think I have ever listened to the lyrics quite as closely as I did this morning while sharing this. It also hits kind of close because my wife and I have been planning a trip to Vermont for a bit now and so him singing about Vermont in the fall is kind of poignant.
If you have never heard of him before, I highly recommend checking out Noah Kahan. Besides Stick Season he has another song called "Dial Drunk" that is trending on the charts right now.
Dominic Fike came to me in a similar fashion as Noah Kahan. Either I was listening to the Spectrum channel or Alt Nation on Sirius/XM or I was listening to Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo on Spotify and when that album finished, "Ant Pile" was one of the songs it threw at me.
This song is still pretty mellow, but it definitely has a heavier alternative vibe to it than the first song I shared. I haven't dug into Dominic's catalog as much as I have Noah's, but I did like it enough that I reached out to my niece and asked if she had ever heard of him. She replied that she hadn't and things were kind of left at that.
My niece has a friend who is really into music. I mean really really into music, she goes to pretty much every obscure band that comes to their area. Sometimes with her dad and sometimes with friends. Now, I've been to a lot of concerts in my time, but I have to admit, I am a little jelly at some of the shows my nieces friend has attended.
Even though my niece hadn't heard of the two artists I mentioned before, my hope is that she will at least remember I mentioned them. That way, when her friend is like "oh, you have to check out this guy", something will click and she will say "Oh, yeah, my uncle told me about him a while ago.
Thus cool uncle status is achieved!
"Nothing Matters" by The Last Dinner Party actually has a pretty funny story. It went totally over my head that 
Okay, so they are still pretty exciting. The first thing I thought when I heard "Nothing Matters" was the fact that they have a definite ABBA vibe to them. Except they drop the F bomb quite a bit in this song. I can't recall ABBA having ever done that. Oddly enough, they aren't from Sweden though, they are actually quite British.
The sad thing about The Last Dinner Party is the fact that they only have two songs out right now. The aforementioned "Sinner" and "Nothing Matters". It's pretty safe to say that I am going to be following them pretty closely and pouncing anytime they have new music available.
I just really dig their sound and style. It's some good stuff. A nice intermingling of that old disco sound and a new alternative sound.
It does look like they have a new song out called "My Lady of Mercy". It's only available on their official site from what I can tell, but I am checking it out right now.
Okay, wow, this is pretty insane. The direction it goes when you get to the chorus is pretty insane. This is maybe one of the most complex songs I have listened to in a while. Head to their site and check it out. I think you might even dig it
