A short time before my wife and I were about to leave with my nieces for their first trip to the UP (Upper Peninsula of Michigan), @mrsbozz asked if I had a trip to Pictured Rocks on my itinerary. I didn't, but we quickly agreed that making the hour or so drive over to Munising, MI would be more than worth it to give our nieces the real "UP experience".
If you read my post yesterday, you know that they already visited one of the top five tourist spots in the UP, Pictured Rocks sits squarely in the top three of that top five list, so like I said, it was a no brainer for us to take them there. I hopped online Wednesday night before the Friday we left and booked us some seats on a two hour cruise that takes you twelve miles up the shoreline to view pictured rocks.
The sandstone cliffs of pictured rocks national lakeshore are truly something to be seen. The minerals that seep out of the cliffs "paint" the rocks different colors. It's quite honestly breathtaking. I have never been to the painted desert out west, but they compare the two quite frequently.
The boat tour is definitely worth it if you get the chance to attend. We did the $50 per person Spray Falls tour, but they offer a variety of other ones. My sister and her husband tried to do one of the sunset tours once and ended up seeing nothing but fog, so keep the weather in mind when you book.
As I mentioned before, the tour is two hours, and it follows the same path back as you take heading out so both sides of the boat can see the formations. This means if you were on the cliff side heading out, your ride back is probably going to be a bit boring (and vice versa).
Our tour started at 11:00 and it is safe to say after two hours on the boat spanning across lunch time, we were more than a little hungry when we got off.
There are a ton of great places to eat in the tourist town of Munising, fish trucks with fresh whitefish caught that day in Lake Superior line the coast. My nieces were hungry for a burger and therefore we settled on Eh! Burger.
Eh! Burger (pronounced "Aye" Burger in accordance with the Yooper Dialect) sits right up the hill from the docks where the boat tour starts and stops.
While the building is not new, the establishment is having opened just a few short years ago (2018) by a military veteran. My nieces kept calling it Eh! Burger with the Eh sounding more like the end of "Meh". We insisted to them that it was actually pronounced "Aye" and were vindicated when the person behind the counter verified our assumption.
As excited as I was to have as much whitefish as possible while in the UP of Michigan, I decided that a burger sounded better, so I went with that. We pretty much all got the same meal except @mrsbozz who doesn't like beef and went with a chicken sandwich.
You place your order at a counter much like a fast food restaurant, but then you head over to this area where you wait for your food to arrive. I definitely wouldn't consider this "fast" food. I had to wait a little over 20 minutes for my food to come out. If it were a traditional restaurant, I would expect the time to be about the same, so I wasn't too mad about it.
@mrsbozz said that her chicken sandwich was very good. It looks pretty darn good in my opinion. It almost makes me wish I could have gone back the rest of the week and tried everything on the menu.
It was a really solid burger, I have to be honest, I didn't really taste it because I scarfed it down so fast. Like I said, we were pretty hungry from being on the boat for two hours plus the hour and a half drive just to get from our campground to Munising.
My wife got "Tater Tots" with her chicken sandwich and while they were quite tasty, for me the start of this trip were the fries.
They had some amazing seasoning on them and they were the perfect balance of crisp on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. Paired with a bit of ketchup and they were basically outstanding. When I brought the food back to our table, I was afraid we were going to have way too much, but we demolished it all in record time.
I think the one drawback for Eh! Burger is the cost. For four people, our total bill came to just about $80. That's $20 for a burger/chicken sandwich, fry, and drink. Pretty steep by even sit down restaurant standards I would say.
The one thing you need to keep in mind is the fact that this is a tourist town. Along with that, it is a tourist town in the "middle of nowhere". It's pretty safe to assume that prices are going to be inflated given those two facts.
Given how busy Eh! Burger was when we were there, I don't think they have anything to worry about (except maybe the "off" season).
One piece of advice I would give:
Don't try to fit Eh! Burger in before your boat tour, it is better to save it for after. There were a number of people sitting around us who were waiting impatiently for their food and then had virtually seconds to throw it down their throats before they had to be in line to catch their ride for the boat tour. Don't put yourself in that position, plan ahead.
Is Eh! Burger worth the visit? Absolutely! Bring your wallet and your appetite though, you are going to need both!
