I didn't know it was a rip-off,
Every time I opened my wallet,
Every time I reluctantly took out cash to buy illicit drugs.
I was paying multiple times; every time took cocaine,
Marijuana, bath salts, ecstasy, and flakka,
Krokodil, LCD, heroin, and name it.
I would inhale, swallow or inject them.
I wanted to repeat the experience, to get high.
How I have been ripped off!

Drug abuse

I paid a high price, my health deteriorated,
Kidney failure, higher risk of HIV infection and agitation,
Hallucinations, violence and panic attacks,
Confusion, depression, and anxiety,
I nearly lost my life,
I wanted to escape reality and anxiety,
But drugs compromised my ability to act,
And increased my anxiety instead,
A life without drugs became more frightening than otherwise,
I was addicted to the fleeting high the drug created in me.
I tore my family to shreds,
I neglected and abused my wife and children,
I would feel nothing when they cried to me for food,
When they were sick,
I could not afford medical care.
I depleted my means of maintenance,
I tried to stop, but the urge for one more high was overwhelming,
All my rewards were coming from drug abuse.
I did not realize that experiencing a brief high was not worth the price,
I was paying too much to maintain my illicit habit.
I didn't know I was a cheat,
The taxpayer footed my health bill,
He paid for the 'seek and find' game,
I played so often with law enforcement officers,
The taxpayer opened his wallet;
And paid for the damaged property,
My employer paid for lost productivity and accidents at work,
Until he realized that I was addicted to illicit drugs,
And he decided to pull the rug from under me.
Give me knowledge, and I will conquer drug abuse
I didn't know I was contributing to the success of drug barons,
Sitting on top of a $600-billion transnational business,
A business second only counterfeiting,
Magnates who sit in golden chairs and command government officials,
Moguls who sustain corruption in many countries,
Tycoons who pull invisible strings and governments reel,
Moguls who control the world remotely,
Before whom even presidents humble themselves.
Why should I work for them?
At the expense of my health, family, and nation?
I refused to contribute another sent to the drug barons,
Because they enrich themselves on my spending,
And exploit me because of my lack of knowledge.
Let us all teach our children about futility abusing drugs,
And the value of avoiding bad company,
Give me knowledge, and I will conquer illicit drugs.
