No walk should be missed, not even imaginary ones because sometimes we can only afford it. The imaginary ones remain the last option, fortunately, the ones from memories remain, and if they are helped by the photographs taken, we get to the real walk.
This introduction I made to get to the walk I will show now. Health problems forced me to hospital admission and an operation, not so complicated but still on the heart and very painful. Now I am convalescing and can't miss the opportunity given by @tattoodjay to report on the walks.
This is an unrelated part of the walks I have done regularly in Herastrau Park in Bucharest. My favorite place to walk and relax!
A late January walks in this uncharted winter as it has been in my town. The only sign that it was still winter was that the lake in the park had frozen water around the banks.
The trees that are defoliated and some even fallen into the lake, which seem to be leaning on the gravel stakes, offer a slightly scary image, of the stark wings of some fantastic bird, reminiscent of scenes from horror movies. This was in my imagination, otherwise, the day was very beautiful with sunshine and blue skies.
Many birds live in the park and especially on the lake, some that should not be here if I think of the seagulls. Instead of flying across seas and oceans, unfortunately, many gulls have ended up living in big cities! At least those in the park still get some water and fish but many have ended up feeding at city dumps. So sad!
For the birds, this winter has been extremely mild and the fact that the lake has not frozen over completely has given them a chance to find food in the water. Gulls, cormorants, and wild ducks.
For the history of the place, I will tell a little about a part of the park inaccessible to walkers like me, the Bucharest Diplomats Club.
In 1922 the "Băneasa Country-club Sports Circle" was founded in Bucharest with 143 individuals and two legal entities, the "Jockey-club" and the "Automobile club".
In the same year, the "Băneasa Sports Club" Association received a 15 ha plot of land from the town hall to build "golf courses, grass polo, tennis, swimming, canoeing, obstacle course, pigeon shooting, etc.". on condition that they develop the rest of the "National Park" (now King Michael I Park). By contract, he was obliged to develop more than 30 hectares at the expense of the association, for which he received half of the area under management.
Such places and buildings have a turbulent history. After Romania became a communist state this place was the exclusive place of the new rulers and their families. At that time we were not allowed to walk around this part of the park.
After the fall of communism in 1989, the club was taken over by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which transferred it to a foundation run by the new privileged of fate, former communists who have now become businessmen. It has remained an exclusive club for foreign diplomats, but besides, a lot of current politicians spend their free time there.
This is a historical place left from the old Romania when it was a kingdom. Such places always have special rules and restricted access. I don't mind and ignore that. I am glad that I can walk around the rest of the park and that I can get close to the ancient trees, the remains of a great forest called Codrii Vlasiei.
I was pleased that now, from the bed where I am forced to stay, I could remember this walk and hope that I will be able to repeat it soon!
I'll say it again and again, I've found that my main activity lately is... walking. Like all of you, I love to walk, but only now I have realized that walking has become my main mode of relaxation. Slowly, slowly overtaking the other pleasures I still have.
