There are many experts who say that compatibility is the linchpin to successful relationships between people. Yet, there are others who subscribe to the notion that, in fact, “opposites attract“. These opposing theories about what really constitutes a happy and strong bond between two people often cause major disagreements.

Is the issue of compatibility between a couple of paramount importance in a love relationship? Or, will the union survive and be successful even if it doesn’t exist?

Does your partner have to like all the same things and be a virtual carbon copy of you, or will it cause issues from the start and the relationship be doomed to failure?

However, before we get involved in a discussion about the possible consequences of too much or too little compatibility between couples in romantic relationships, it might be best to listen to an opinion about what being compatible with your partner really means.

Compatibility and Love Relationships
Is compatibility a major component of successful relationships? If so, to what extent do you and your partner have to share similar feelings, values, characteristics and interests to be sure your relationship flourishes?

I think you’d agree that for people to achieve successful relationships there needs to be some compatibility of life values, interests and personality characteristics. But, the question still remains, how much ‘common ground‘ do you need to share with a person to indicate that you’re right for one another?

With the basics for successful relationships being covered to some extent, let’s retrace what we know as the fundamentals of seeking a compatible partner…

Successful Relationship Compatibility “Rules”

  • You want to find a person that enjoys some of the same activities that you do. If you both like entirely different things, then there’s nothing for you to share when you spend time together. It makes the time strained for one person or the other. It also creates uneasiness and can cause unhappiness in the end. This most likely will result in the end of your relationship.

While it’s perfectly acceptable to like different things and have a successful relationship, you cannot be completely opposite! There has to be some common ground so that you have things to do during your time together.

  • You will want a person who shares some characteristics with you. Of course, you want them to have their own personality and be their own person. Differences are important for success and you will get bored in a relationship if you are both too much alike.

  • It’s important that people in relationships have similar ideals relating to life and events in it. If you are religious, you would want to be with someone who shares similar religious values. If you have a desire to have a family, then it’s obvious that you should be with someone who also has a desire for children. In regards to life ideals, this is where compatibility is a must.

The best thing that you can do when dating is to find someone who is compatible with you. Talk to them about what you like. If there is something that you are completely against, make sure that they know that from the very beginning. Tell them what you are looking for and what your ideal match would be like. Talk about characteristics and personality traits.

All of these things are important and can help you have successful relationships. Compatibility in a love relationship can, and does, have many variables. How much people need to have in common with their partners will be different from situation to situation and there is no ‘one-size-fits-all‘ solution. Cover your basic requirements and you’re well on your way!
