Are online relationships worth the time and effort? Most likely, if you asked a large enough group of people, you’d get a fifty-fifty split, both negative and positive. Your actual reasons for wanting to develop a relationship with someone on the internet would be the key focus question.

Whatever your motives are for seeking an online relationship, whether it’s for romance, friendship, companionship or anything else, both you and the other person need to adhere to certain “rules“. And, developing a satisfactory relationship with another person does follow certain tried and true characteristics.

To begin with, both individuals involved need to be upfront about what they expect to get out of the relationship. That’s not to say that you have to totally commit to one another right from the start, but more along the lines of communicating how you both would like to see the relationship progress. Is it to remain solely online, or will you make it more personal?

Know Where Your Online Relationship Is Heading.
It’s vitally important that both of you have a clear understanding of where the online relationship is heading. Confusion and upset will be the only outcome if one of you wants to continue the romance or friendship offline, while the other prefers it to remain solely on the net!

It’s a well-known and sorry fact that many people use online relationships in chatrooms and dating sites to cheat on their real-life partners. By stating from the outset, what you both envisage as the future of your “cyber relationship“, neither of you will be under any misapprehensions or get your signals confused which may lead to feelings or emotions being damaged.

Just Who Are You Really Talking To? The Online Relationship Dilemma!
When people are involved in an online relationship of any kind, an obvious problem always exists. You don’t really know for certain who you’re talking to. Identities can be false or hidden and it’s almost impossible to really form a bond with another person, especially if you can’t be sure who, or what, they really say they are!

Online relationships allow you to fill in a lot of the blanks about a person, and more often than not you’ll fill things in the way you would like them to be. And, this is probably one of the largest stumbling blocks people have to contend with when trying to have a relationship on the internet should the both of you decide to keep things strictly online. You can never really get to know someone properly. If, however, you and the other person agree to meet “face-to-face”, of course, this problem can be overcome.

Many people would argue that you can never really get to know another person, but if you’ve actually met them in person at least you know to some degree, if they are really who they say they are.

So, when attempting to figure out whether or not developing a relationship online is any good, and if it’s worth the time and effort, it really boils down to asking yourself an important question. What do YOU want from the relationship? What are you seeking? Love, friendship or perhaps just a sexual encounter.

The internet offers an easy way to meet new and different people so just be sure you are clear on what your expectations are before you start online relationships of any kind, as it could save you a lot of emotional pain and heartache should you just venture into them blindly.
