Today was great, a lot of adventures and no dull moment, this made it interesting. I set out for a space for rent and I saw a place full of natural resources but those guys have no will power to make good use of it.
A friend, I left behind for more than a decade ago, is now into piggery. He has more than 10 piglets and more than 15 matured pigs.
I met him flushing pig's droppings and I was shocked. This dropping could be carefully pack to a dry place for it to cool and then after could be applied on plantain plantation. This helps in softening the soil and in balancing of soil ph needed for boosting the growth of the plantain.
Plantain leaves can in turn serves as food for pigs. Dirty water from the pig's pen can also be used to water the plantain. Of course, cassava farm does well in such environment. Cassava peels can also form part of pig's feed when properly processed.
I asked about their feeding and was told, malt by product (chaff) mixed with wheat offal soaked in water for a day. This is to softened it and also to cause it to rise thereby increasing the quantity.
What I noticed was that, the pens were dilapidated and this is mostly caused by not using quality and enough mortar during construction. The roof was still in good condition as it was made using asbestos.
According to my friend, the demand for pork is higher during festive periods.
One can go into this and make a lot of money. There is challenges of capital and also unavailability of facility. There are a lot avenues to make money in Nigeria and in extension, Africa.
It was a nice experience seeing live pigs and how there are being taken care of.
