I guess that all parents eventually hit this stage... but I'm still hitting it with my oldest child just finishing primary school and heading onward to high school next year. It really only feels like a few moments ago when she was just a little baby, then a little toddler, and still just a little girl... and now, she appears to be an almost fully grown human being in her own right... well, not quite, but starting to get there.
She is still as sweet and considerate as ever... and I really hope that she keeps at least some of that as she navigates through her teenage and high school years. Honestly, I expect that she will be less of a handful than our younger one... but you never know how these things will work out.
She does have a good old laugh at her father's lack of fashion sense... recently, I was with her choosing a phone and some earbuds... of course, I'm all about the specs and hardware and all of that sort of thing... but she was much more into the looks of the two things. Sigh... I guess that she didn't pick up my genes on that sort of thing, but she did at least listen to and take into account the things that I explained were also JUST as IMPORTANT as what the devices looked like!
What she was most keen on was earbuds that looked a certain way.... I'm not that keen on those, but I'm dorky with the neckbuds for extra battery life and ability to sit on my shoulders and not drop out of my ears! And both the phone and earbuds should be white... or light, and not my usual preference for black... or some really eye catching fluoro colour!
So, we did manage to find the white earbuds that were also decent for the hardware inside as well... but the phone, nope... we ended up going for a black one, because the only white ones that we could find at the price point that we were willing to pay for were all with anemic hardware/cameras and/or short security and update life cycles. So, I was able to explain that those things were just as important to her enjoyment of the phone as what it looked like in a case...
Sigh.... but it is symptomatic of her growing up... she has her own tastes (mostly better in style matters than mine...), but at least she does still listen to me on things that I know something about. I do hope that continues, and I hope that high school and the incoming teenage years don't dull her curiosity and drive to learn and find out about things. I worry about the teenage "cool apathy" that seems to be quite pervasive... the dulling of the mind to the point where it is unrecoverable...
The worries of a father... but I guess, in the end, whatever happens... I will still always be proud!
