It is fast approaching that time of year again and everyone is getting ready for their own Halloween festivities. First, the word Halloween was called All Hallows Eve, the night before All Saints Day. Halloween’s origins go back to the Celtic festival of Samhain. It is celebrated on October 31 each year.

By the late 1800’s Halloween was enjoyed by communities as a friendly get together and not one that focused on pranks or ghosts. By the turn of the century Halloween became a commonly known for a day to celebrate with games, festivals, food and festive costumes.

Adults were discouraged against associating anything scary with Halloween by the 20th century. Over time since then there have been more and more people that have tried to put the scary part back into Halloween. There are numerous advertised nights and week-long events scheduled around Halloween to celebrate with fright night, haunted houses and scary costumes.

Costumes come in all types and forms. The sky is the limit with some of the costumes of today’s society. From the simple traditional costumes all the way to the extremes that could be found in a lot of scary movies today. So whether you like the thrill of being scared on Halloween or the excitement of creating something mystical to portray for one night, this is a great time to show off your style and have fun with it.

Many of us remember the apple bobbing game at Halloween parties when we were younger. It is a racing game with a tub filled with water and apples. You hold your hands behind your back and try to catch an apple with your teeth before anyone else does. Sometimes it is not as easy as it seems but a lot of fun.

Carmel or candy apples were another one of my favorites. Of course, it seemed like it took forever to make the carmel apples, but that may have just been because I was a kid and couldn’t wait to eat one. Yummy

And who could forget about the candy corn and carving up your favorite pumpkin. And don’t forget baking those delicious seeds for a snack time favorite. Oh yea and the popcorn balls fresh and warm, these are a new favorite.

Costumes sure have changed since I was young. I can remember getting scared to death by someone dressed up like Frankenstein. Now in today’s standards that would probably not scare me now unless of course he were to jump out at me :0 Some of the costumes I have seen this year have been very exotic, mystical, sci fi and scary.

I think every year some people try to outdo their previous year with the scare factor.
So this year as you start your Halloween festivities, be safe, have fun and enjoy your time with friends and family.
