English version
On a day like today, on July 12, 1904, one of the most popular poets in Latin America, Pablo Neruda, was born in El Parral, Chile. That is not actually his birth name, which was Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. The pseudonym Pablo Neruda uses it from 1946 in homage to a Czech poet, Jan Neruda.
His mother died just a month after the poet was born. At that moment his father decided to move to Temuco, where Neruda did his first studies, there he met the great Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral and began working at a very young age in a newspaper, until he moved to the capital, Santiago, at the age of sixteen, to begin studies as a French teacher and already in the capital he joined as an editor in the magazine "Claridad", in which his poems are published.
In 1924, when he was barely 20 years old, the Chilean poet published the book that would give him international fame "Twenty love poems and a desperate song", in this collection of poems, of great emotional intensity, the young poet already mastered the art of poetic writing, uses successful literary figures such as similes, metaphors and hyperbole, to talk about the beloved woman and love and its vicissitudes, desire, surrender, and loss. I will share two of the poems from that book:
poem 1
Woman's body, white hills, white thighs,
you resemble the world in your attitude of delivery.
My wild peasant body undermines you
and makes the son jump from the bottom of the earth.
I was just like a tunnel. the birds fled from me
and in me the night entered its powerful invasion.
To survive myself I forged you as a weapon
like an arrow in my bow, like a stone in my sling.
But the hour of revenge falls, and I love you.
Body of skin, of moss, of avid and firm milk.
Oh the glasses on the chest! Ah the eyes of absence!
Ah, the pubic roses! Ah your slow and sad voice!
Body of my woman, will persist in your grace.
My thirst, my endless desire, my indecisive path!
Dark channels where the eternal thirst follows,
and the fatigue continues, and the infinite pain.
poem 18
Here I love you.
In the dark pines the wind disentangles itself.
The moon phosphorescent over the wandering waters.
They spend the same days chasing each other.
fog unfurls in dancing figures.
A silver gull slips down from the sunset.
Sometimes a candle. High, high stars.
Or the black cross of a ship.
Only.
Sometimes up early and even my soul is wet.
The distant sea sounds, resounds.
This is a port.
Here I love you.
Here I love you and in vain the horizon hides you.
I'm loving you still among these cold things.
Sometimes my kisses go on those grave boats,
that run through the sea where they do not arrive.
I already see myself forgotten like these old anchors.
The docks are sadder when the afternoon docks.
My uselessly hungry life is tired.
I love what I do not have. You are so distant.
My boredom struggles with the slow twilights.
But the night comes and begins to sing to me.
The moon turns its clockwork dream.
They look at me with your eyes the biggest stars.
And how I love you, the pines in the wind,
They want to sing your name with their wire blades.
In these poems, the figure of the beloved woman and the feelings or desires that love arouses are intertwined with images of nature, especially the seascape, revealing the influence of that rural, not urban landscape that saw him grow. In a good part of his work, images of nature will reappear to express emotions and feelings.
Other important works by Pablo Neruda are: "Residence on earth" (1933 and 1935); "Spain in the heart", about the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) "Come see the blood in the streets"... "General Sing" (1950); "Elementary Odes" (1954-1957). In 1971 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
His life was an itinerant journey through various countries and cities. Due to financial constraints, he accepted a consular position at a very young age, in 1926, to represent Chile in exotic Asian countries, Burma, Ceylon, Java, Singapore. Between 1934 and 1938 he lived in Spain, where he met the great poets of the generation of '27, Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Vicente Aleixandre, Gerardo Diego, Miguel Hernández. Upon returning to Chile in 1939, he joined the communist party, having previously supported the republican cause during the Spanish Civil War.
Later he lived in Mexico, and later traveled through the USSR, China and the countries of Eastern Europe. He was appointed by Salvador Allende as ambassador to France in 1971, a position he would resign when the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet began. He died in Santiago on September 23, 1973, where he had returned seriously ill after the military coup.
