BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Weekly Challenge! Briar Patch
In battles with the Briar Patch ruleset, all Monsters have the Thorns Ability. Monsters with the Thorns Ability do damage back to the attacker when hit with a Melee Attack. That's why I take care not to use Melee Attack Monsters in battles with the Briar Patch ruleset. But I can also use Melee Attack Monsters according to other rulesets of battle and my strategy. In battles with the Briar Patch ruleset, if I have the opportunity, I add at least one Monster with the Amplify Ability to my team without hesitation. Because Monsters with the Amplify Ability increase Thorns' damage by 1. There are 9 Monsters with the Amplify Ability in Splinterlands, and there is also Summoner Grandmaster Rathe, who gives the Amplify Ability to all friendly monsters. That's why I prefer Grandmaster Rathe as the Summoner if I have the opportunity in such battles. By the way, Cabalist is the only Monster that has the Amplify Ability at level 1.

A lot of players thought that monsters without damage are useless. However, these monsters, sometimes, are the strongest when certain rules of combat are in place.
Briar Patch lets you take damage when your melee monster attacks. In other words, if you don't (and cannot) attack, you won't take damage, right?

Welcome to another Splinterlands Battle Mage Secrets Weekly Challenge. For this challenge, we are going to discuss the briar patch ruleset or the ruleset where all monsters have the thorn ability. This is like everyone have the Mylor effect.
BATTLE MAGE SECRETS : BRIAR PATCH RULESET
Briar Patch is one of the simple and popular ruleset to be used. Basically Briar Patch bestow Thorns ability on all cards. Thorn is a type of counter abilities which would deal return damage if triggered by a successful melee attack. So the main strategy is to avoid using melee cards at all cost. Although this isn't always the case because Thorns have 2 damage as the upper cap, and having Shield ability will reduce the damage by 1.

Melee teams are quite strong in Splinterlands and there are many strong melee monsters in the game. Countering melee attackers are often quite a challenge. And many players go for a summoner like Mylor Crowling because of the Thorns ability which is the best counter available in game against melee. However, we always do not need a summoner to get the taste of the Thorns ability with the introduction of the BRIAR PATCH rule set.

Until the Briar Patch ruleset came along, the only chance we had to use the thorns were with the mighty Mylor Crowling who gave your team an awesome advantage and punished anybody daring to use a melee attack against you.
