Eurofighter Typhoon
Yesterday King Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey. The plan was that a flight of over 60 aircraft would perform a flypast following the coronation. As some of the aircraft taking part would be flying from RAF Coningsby. I thought, rather than be cooped indoors all day, with the TV showing a second by second account of the coronation, I would drive over to Coningsby and catch the aircraft departing for the muster point and watch a little part of it in "real life".
Three Typhoons
By the time I had driven the 25 miles or so I was beginning to think it was a really bad idea. First of all, the BBMF (Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight) hangar was closed up, (which I gueassed meant that they wouldn't be flying) and it had started raining. When I arrived at the car park it was utterly rammed with aviation spotters. I went to a further parking area and managed to find a spot and then walked down to the fence close to one of the runways.
Two Typhoons on taxi
It was a good couple of hours before there was any action. So I waited by the fence, checking social media and flight websites. Aviation enthusiasts are an odd breed (I guess I am too 馃榿) but with a lot of them its all about being the one with the most knowledge, or the inside info. Usually no matter how accurate that information is. For example up until around five or ten minutes before the Typhoons took off, word was still be passed around that the Lancaster, Spitfires and Hurricanes would be airborne shortly. This turned out to be completely inaccurate.
Typhoons in the rain
Nine typhoons went up and the rain came down. Heavily. I decided to call it a day and not wait for their return. By the time I got home and switched on the TV it was just in time to see the "Red Arrows" fly over Buckingham Palace and the commentator state the the rest of the flypast had been cancelled due to the weather.
FOD free zone
It was a shame it was cancelled, but understandable. But it did make me smile as the last thing I heard from another enthusiast, just before I got back to the car was that all the aircraft had mustered and were on their way to the palace. A bit of back stepping needed there I think.
