Hello everyone

This morning, right after dropping off my kid at school, I decided to head over to The Big Buddha. I mean, if you've been to Phuket, you've seen that massive white Buddha up on the mountain, right? It's pretty hard to miss.

Getting there was a bit of a ride, though. The road leading up to the Big Buddha Temple was this narrow, twisty affair, about six kilometers long. So, I took it slow and steady. The morning was quiet, you know, that kind of serene quiet that makes you appreciate the world around you. Sometimes you'd spot tourists hoofing it up the mountain, getting in a good workout and some soul-searching, I guess.

When I finally reached the top of Nak Kerd Mountain, in Karon Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province, there it was - Phra Phuttha Mingmongkol Aeknakkiri, in all its glory. It's this white Buddha, striking a peaceful pose. The way it's put together is something else. A marvel of architecture, the statue spanned a remarkable 25 meters in width and soared to an impressive 45 meters in height. Constructed with reinforced concrete, its surface gleamed with the ethereal luster of white Burmese jade marble.

As I approached Wat Phra Yai, the clock ticked just past 8:10 a.m. Despite the early hour, the sun hung high in the sky, casting down waves of scorching heat. It seemed I'd arrived in the midst of a sweltering day. The air was tinged with a faint mist, veiling the surroundings in a soft haze. While it lent an almost mystical aura to the scene, it also made the view a tad unclear.

My gaze was drawn to a group of 2 to 3 foreign tourists, each one captivated by the sight before them. They were busy capturing the essence of the place, focusing their lenses on the brilliant white Naga steps that led up to the majestic figure of the Big Buddha. This spot, without a doubt, was the crown jewel of the temple. It was easy to see why. The contrast of the gleaming white steps against the brilliant blue sky, with the towering Buddha in the background, was a sight to behold. It was a scene that begged to be immortalized in photographs.

This staircase, I quickly gathered, was a magnet for visitors. It was the place where memories were forged, where people paused to absorb the sheer grandeur of the setting. The statue of the Big Buddha, standing tall and serene, seemed to watch over all who approached. It was a tableau that captured the essence of this sacred place, where earthly and spiritual realms converged in breathtaking harmony.

Climbing the steps, I turned to take in the view below. There it was, Chalong Bay, sprawled out before me. Yet, my excitement was met with a touch of disappointment. Today, the sky wasn't its usual clear self. Instead, a wispy veil of fog hung over the surroundings, obscuring the scenery and making every photo I attempted a bit hazy. It was a shame, as I knew on a different day, this view would have been absolutely breathtaking.

Absolutely, the significance of the construction of Phra Phuttha Mingmongkol Aeknagkhiri, The Big Buddha, cannot be overstated. It stands not just as a physical structure, but as a powerful symbol of peace, unity, and hope.

The creation of this monumental statue relied heavily on the collaborative efforts and contributions of both Thai citizens and foreigners residing in Thailand. It serves as a testament to the collective spirit and shared vision of a harmonious world. This endeavor brought together people from different backgrounds and cultures, highlighting the potential for unity among diverse communities.

The Big Buddha's presence on Nak Kerd Mountain serves as a beacon, radiating a message of tranquility and understanding to all who encounter it. It stands as a reminder that, through cooperation and shared purpose, remarkable achievements can be realized, transcending geographical, cultural, and linguistic boundaries.

In essence, The Big Buddha is a living testament to the power of collective action and the potential for positive change that arises when individuals come together with a common goal. It is a source of inspiration for generations to come, encouraging us all to work together for the betterment of our world.

Upon reaching the summit, I took a leisurely stroll around, eager to soak in the splendor of both the temple and the picturesque surroundings. From this vantage point, the sea stretched out before me and nestled below were quaint houses, seemingly miniature in comparison. Yet, as I mentioned earlier, the weather wasn't playing along today. The usual clarity was missing, leaving me with only a glimpse of what this view could truly offer on a better day.

Descending on the opposite side, I found myself enveloped in a lush canopy of trees. The branches were alive with monkeys, swinging and playing amidst the foliage. The shade was so dense that it nurtured vibrant green moss on the rocks below, creating a soothing, almost ethereal sight. It was incredibly easy on the eyes, and I couldn't help but take a moment to relish in this natural tranquility.

Before heading back home, I made sure to pay my respects to the Buddha statue housed in the sermon hall. It felt like the proper way to conclude my visit, leaving me with a sense of reverence and peace in my heart.
