Why do we think AI will kill us all?
This has been a burning question in my head.
A lot of people have been debating human extinction by AI and today I spent more time than usual thinking about it.
Well, to be honest, I spent most of said time asking myself "why do the strong eat the weak?"
The reason is because the more I thought about the concept of extinction by AI, the more it kept ringing in my head that it is basically a "top of the food chain" type problem.
Predator and prey, more intelligent and less intelligent, strong and weak.
Inherent drive
For a moment, I thought people were just being scared of something they didn't understand but as I explored the topic more broadly, by mostly self-reflecting, I figured that we actually do understand this.
It is a fear that can be traced back to nature, which we hold a critical role today.
So will AI really kill us all?
Honestly, the simple answer is that some form of it will definitely try.
You know, when we talk about AI, we describe it like something that will be in one form, but this isn't and will never be the case.
Even with super intelligence, we'll have over a million, if not a billion forms of autonomous machine intelligence.
Now, because generally, when this technology gets to a certain stage, it will enter a phase of chasing its own independent objectives and sometimes this will conflict with human needs or values.
In this case, humans will be an obstacle to achieving its goals and obstacles are often something that needs to be eliminated.
So yes, it is expected but that doesn't mean we should shut it all down now. There's significant value in getting the tech to a point of super intelligence, so we have to plan for what the costs of that achievement might be.
I would like to add that maybe the last thing AI may need to achieve is the intelligence to resist the elimination of humans because the highest form of intelligence will be being able to aim high without wanting to result to mass murdering.
