Recovery: When & How?

It's been past 2.5 months since I started working from home. In the US we are past peak, so is in my local City of Houston. My favorite restaurants are opening up one by one. Last weekend, we had a family lunch at a local bistro after months and it felt good. Today, I have a business lunch with a friend for the first time in 3 months, in just a few hours and I am excited to be out and around.

Data

I was trying to catch up how's recovery been shaping up in different countries and the following chart caught my attention.

Source

Its a beautifully displayed data. It is a plot of Covid-19 recovery rate against Peoples Mobility rate in different countries. I typically look at countries where my family have businesses in and we travel frequently. Obviously US and UK are the first two places I look at. They remain in the low mobility - low recovery quadrant. UK still seems basically shut-down. US is trying get out get out of the red box, but not quite there yet.

Next, I looked at Greece. We were supposed to be there for about a month, but I cancelled the trip because of the low mobility. I was not sure how enjoyable summer is going to be in Europe in general. I couldn't find Cyprus in the chart, but but I suspect it is performing better than Greece.

Looking at the positives; seems like Australia and New Zealand is the place to be this summer, which will be winter over there. Even the far east is looking quite good. Japan in particular, I am looking forward to visit. Perhaps later in the year.

Summer

Summer is an important travel time for our family as kids are out of school (well they are out of school for 3 months now!). We typically take a long trip in Summer. So this year, I really struggled to put something together. I have made so many cancellations, but finally looking it south central Washington in the NW United States in the place to be in summer. I am looking forward to cooler weather, snows up in Mt. Rainier and Mt. Hood, long walks through the wet coastal rain forests and a few ghost encounters :)
