Day Trip to Uppsala
After spending my first weekend day, Saturday, exploring the vibrant streets of Stockholm, I was ready for a change of pace on Sunday. I headed north by train toward historic Uppsala.
Boarding the 918 train to Uppsala Central Station, I settled in for a wonderfully pleasant 40-minute ride. Watching the picturesque Swedish countryside roll by right outside my window made the journey fly by.
Awe and Grandeur at Uppsala Cathedral
My first stop upon arriving was the magnificent Uppsala Cathedral (Uppsala domkyrka). Standing tall as a massive, spectacular landmark both inside and out, it dominates the city skyline.
Stepping inside, I was completely awestruck by the sheer scale of the pipe organ architecture. The cathedral actually houses prominent historic organs, including the magnificent 19th-century Romantic instrument built by Per Larsson Åkerman in 1871, featuring thousands of pipes—with its largest pipes stretching impressively overhead. Wandering through the soaring nave, the dramatic light filtering through the intricate late 19th-century stained glass windows cast vibrant colors across the ancient stone pillars, creating a truly serene, atmospheric experience.
Exploring the University Campus
From the cathedral, I strolled over toward the historic Uppsala University campus. Even though the grand main hall was closed on Sunday, admiring its stately architecture from the outside was a treat in itself.
Nearby, I had the incredible opportunity to see the legendary Silver Codex (Codex Argenteus) on display. Dating back to the 6th century, this breathtaking illuminated manuscript contains fragments of the 4th-century Bible translated into the ancient Gothic language by Bishop Wulfila. Seeing it up close is mesmerizing piece of history and art: it features stunning silver and gold letters meticulously inscribed onto thin, regal purple-stained vellum, serving as one of the world's most precious linguistic and historical treasures.
Panoramic Views at Uppsala Castle
Next up was a walk up to Uppsala Castle (Uppsala slott), majestically situated high on a hill overlooking the city. Exploring the museum inside (which conveniently has free admission!) offered a fascinating glimpse into the region’s royal past. Outside on the grounds, I loved taking in the sweeping panoramic views of the flat plains stretching far into the distance, framed by historic cannons pointing outward across the landscape.
A Cozy Fika and Back to Stockholm
After a full morning and afternoon of sightseeing, I walked back down toward the lively town center. No Swedish excursion is complete without a proper break, so I stopped at a local café for a cozy fika—enjoying a delicious pastry and coffee to recharge.
With wonderful memories of centuries-old history, stunning architecture, and peaceful countryside views, I caught the afternoon train back to Stockholm, wrapping up a perfect day trip!
