The song, announced just over a month ago, serves a dual purpose, combining artistic expression with a noble cause. Proceeds from "Oral" will contribute to the legal battle against foreign-owned salmon farming operations in Iceland, supporting residents of Seyðisfjörður in their fight to protect the environment.
The video, conceived and executed by Carlota Guerrero, explores the intersection of AI technology, glitches, and the blurred line between reality and virtuality. Avatars of Björk and Rosalía, wielding swords, symbolize female empowerment and rage. Rather than pitted against each other, they train together to confront a common adversary.
The backdrop to the release is the ongoing environmental concern in Iceland over the impact of salmon farms on the country's ecologically distinctive fjords and native wildlife. This year witnessed heightened public outcry, with protests and demonstrations drawing attention to the environmental consequences of open-net pens used in salmon farming.
Björk shared that she wrote most of "Oral" between her 1997 album, "Homogenic," and 2001’s "Vespertine." The song's original tapes were lost for two decades before being rediscovered during her tour in Australia earlier this year. Describing the track, Björk highlighted its positive and joyful essence, appreciating its happy quality.
"Oral" not only showcases the creative collaboration of two influential artists but also emphasizes their commitment to environmental causes through the support of the legal fight against salmon farming operations.
