They say he suddenly appeared one day and took everyone away, although nobody understood why, as they no longer had souls.

One autumn afternoon, as night was almost falling, it began to envelop the entire resting place. It would linger there through the nights and until the sun was clearly visible. Then it would dissipate, only to return the following night.
No one wanted to speak of it because it took their dead away, leaving their loved ones with nowhere to lay a flower, shed a tear or simply say a few words of farewell. Those words that are repeated over and over again when one stands before a grave, unwilling to let go of the memory of that beloved person, that relative, that friend, that soulmate.
The black mist covered everything within the boundaries of the old cemetery, so ancient that no one could recall when it was founded, yet there lay all the old souls and many who had since joined them.
It was not a person, nor a sectarian group; it was simply the mist that made their bodies vanish, every night, with every new arrival. It almost touched the ground, settling there like a tranquil bird, a black bird that sees all and knows all. It had taken them all, the new arrivals and the ancient bones, every single one, without exception, leaving no trace of their origin or whereabouts.
It was so powerful that it shattered and smashed gravestones, tombs, niches and any decoration that stood in its way; yet, for some reason, it could neither pass through nor reach the depths of certain ancient structures, so old that their age was unknown.
Perhaps the ancient inhabitants knew this and were aware of it, but for that very reason, deep underground, through a small door and down some stairs, they laid their dead to rest.
No one knew where the black mist came from, what it was or what it was looking for; all they knew was that it carried off their dead.
A story passed down from mouth to mouth and from generation to generation spoke of underground tunnels, tunnels that linked the few tombs found there, right at the city’s very origins when the first settlers arrived and made their home there.
Tunnels whose walls speak in an ancient language; no one knows who built them, but amongst the words of millennia-old tongues one can read references to it, as ancient as the planet itself, which carries off the bodies so that the souls may never be reunited and must wander forever in the limbo of oblivion, unable to find meaning or a path.
The ancients learnt this and buried their dead deep underground, to outwit the mist and ensure their relatives could find the right path. They say there is a connection between the soul and the three days following death; some return and others do not, but the black mist sought to prevent that from happening.
Some speak of a world that mirrors our own, where everything is devastation and fear, where life is not possible, not as it is on Earth, but in a pit of pain and weeping. Could it be that those souls are there, the ones whose bodies were never found, or is it where she dwells, the one who takes everything away?
The truth is that the black mist will continue to be there every night, ready to take away every new visitor, thus making the possibility of returning ever more remote. Only a few can return, but the mist does not wish to take that risk.
