My Pen

I came to Steemit to take ownership of my pen. You see, I had spent too much of my writing life in places where there was always someone to tell me which color ink to use, which hand to write with, and ultimately, which words in which order were supposed to flow from my pen. So much of my writing life in fact, that at some point my pen no longer felt like mine. And I desperately wanted it back.

Steemit was built on the very premise that we EACH own our pens. And nobody gets to tell us how to hold it, which words to allow to flow from it, none of it. It is OUR means of self-expression to do with as we please, and the community decides whether what we put on paper with OUR PEN is worth that nifty upvote or not.

It appears though that even here some would like to have more of a say over what my pen does than I do. And that just bloody defeats the freaking purpose of this whole nifty consensus-based decentralized blogging platform.

If I want to write about monkey penises daily and there is a community of people out there who find such posts amusing and want to support my efforts, I don’t see how it’s hurting someone who clearly has no interest in monkey penises or why that person can’t simply ignore my posts. It would seem such an obvious thing. Certainly easier to do than to write a dissertation about how wrong it is to talk about monkey penises or how monkey penis conversations do not belong on this platform - a platform, mind you, that itself does NOT belong to anybody.

In short - I’m here to use MY pen for whatever goals I have. They don’t need to align with your goals or anybody’s. If my ultimate aim is to become an expert on monkey penises - don’t judge me. It is my pen. And it's not hurting anybody.

note: this is indeed a freewrite. I only edited for grammar and an occasional typo.
