Declutter Your Mind

Written By S.J. Scott and Barrie Davenport

As one that suffers from Anxiety and Depression, my mind is almost like my apartment: cluttered. Filled with unnecessary, and negative thoughts. My wife found me this book to read, and I decided to give it a read.

This book is divided into five sections which includes an introduction. Each subject deals in a specific subject on how to uncluttered your mind with messages, quotes, and some exercises in the form of mindfulness and meditation.

The first part is to build habits to declutter your thoughts. As one that read plenty of mindfulness and meditation books, this felt more like review to me with mentioning breathing exercises and removing negative thoughts. Though the last part did felt useful as it explains that you should challenge your negative thoughts with realism. Example, I may make one mistake at work, and been working with that company for a long time, will not get you fired.

Second section deals with organizing your obligations. Funny how this book tells you to declutter your mind, and I felt overwhelmed with this part. The problem is that they gave you so much that you should consider doing to make obligations that it almost felt that I should be obliged to do these worksheets to get things straightened up. I do have to remind myself that each chapter is an option, or a tool, that I can use instead of bringing the entire workbench when I just need a screwdriver.

Third part I felt was more helpful than I first realized as it deals with decluttering your mind from other people. This can be friends, co-workers, family, and loved ones. The part I found the most useful, and may reread it is to not dwell on the past. I do tend to dwell on past mistakes, but I've been getting better to not think too much on it. This is a good chapter to focus on if you find yourself with hardships from people in your life.

Finally, the fourth part is decluttering your mind by just simplifying your life. Most of us have obligations, plans, a hectic schedule, and this can get in the way from doing the simple things in life. This can be distractions from your smart phones or other electronic devices, and your business life. One of the few things I do try to keep in mind is mindfully eat my food, and that is to savor the food from as much sensory stimuli as you can either by sight, smell, and of course taste.

This was a fantastic read, and I would recommend this book if you feel that your mind is as cluttered as something that you can relate like your house (or apartment) or your computer (or any computer device) desktop. Let me know what you think; share your experiences or remedies of what you do to declutter your mind.

Have a nice day!
