One cool evening, few years ago...
After spending almost every waking minute with my Granny for 10 straight good days, I knew that I had to tell her something. We weren’t very close but the few times we had her around were amazing. But this time it was different, she was very ill.
It was so late at night, just before she fell asleep, and I whispered it into her ear. Then she gave me a smile, the kind of smile that makes me smile back and she said, “When I come again in my next life and I think about my life and what it was like to be old, I hope that I remember this very moment.”
Just a few seconds later she closed her eyes and fell asleep. The room was peaceful and almost silent. All I could hear was the faint sound of her breathing. I stayed awake thinking about the lovely times we had spent together and all the choices that we have made in our lives that caused this moment possible.
And at some point, I realized that it didn’t matter what we had done, where we had gone or what the future held for us. But all that mattered that moment was the serenity of the room. Just being with her, seeing her breathe and breathing with her.
