What if our minds always think of potatoes when craving a delicious snack? Maybe we can divert it with other ingredients for variety.
That's what I'm doing now. Admittedly, I rarely buy potatoes because they're more expensive than sweet potatoes. But another thing to consider is that sweet potatoes are sweeter when steamed. My husband and I love steaming sweet potatoes for breakfast, which is why I often have a supply of sweet potatoes in my pantry.
This time I made sweet potato snacks. It does use more oil, but I don't eat this snack every day. So it's not a problem at all. We just need to know our limits and keep moving, moving our bodies.
I've made these sweet potato ball snacks often and have even posted the recipe before. However, this time I found a new variation.
Whereas previously I used glutinous rice flour, this time I used cornstarch. It turned out to make a big difference in the final result. Well, I have to admit, I love this version with cornstarch.
Don't worry. Just a few easy steps. Peel the sweet potato, then cut it into small pieces to speed up the cooking process when steaming it.
Don't forget to preheat the steaming equipment first.
Once the steamer is ready, steam the sweet potato pieces for 10 minutes.
Remove the steamed sweet potato, and while it's still hot, you can immediately knead it to make it easier.
I used a glass cup to mash the steamed sweet potato. Using the bottom of the cup, I mashed the steamed sweet potato.
Once the steamed sweet potato has turned into mashed sweet potatoes, add 4 tablespoons of cornstarch.
Knead until the dough is completely smooth and can be shaped.
Well, this is the step that requires patience. I formed the dough into balls. But you can use any mold that will speed up the process of using this dough, hehe.
Finally, I was able to finish forming the sweet potato balls 😍 There's a certain satisfaction in seeing the round shapes.
Heat the oil. Then, fry the sweet potato balls. Make sure to keep an eye on them because they burn very quickly.
Each side only takes 1.5-2 minutes. So I always stay alert in front of the frying pan 🫣🤣
Remove the sweet potato balls. Oh, what a beautiful golden brown color! Serve with your favorite sauce.
I made a batch of homemade spicy sauce beforehand, so it's perfect for serving with this sweet potato snack.
Serve the sweet potato balls while they're warm. They're crispy on the outside, while the inside remains soft but firm.
When using the sticky rice flour version in the dough, the inside of the balls quickly shrinks and becomes soft.
But with this version using cornstarch, the inside of the balls remains firm and doesn't shrink. Even hours later, the texture remains good.
So, I'm going to use the cornstarch version in these ball snacks. ❤️
