Today I came to tell you a little bit about my vegetable garden. In the city where I live people have the habit of having a garden at home, where they harvest vegetables to make salads and have fresh dressings for their recipes. I followed the saying "Where you go, do as you see" and also started my own garden.
In total I have had three different gardens. The first one was located on a hillside that was a bit far from home and did not have good water access, we had to water the plants with a bucket. That garden was tended by a neighbor and me. Mrs. Irondina, my neighbor, taught me how to take care of each plant we planted. This garden came to an end because some little animals began to arrive at night and ate everything we planted. I never knew what they were called, but I know they were some kind of rodents.

Hoy vine a contarles un poco de mi huerto. En la ciudad donde vivo las personas tienen la costumbre de tener un huerto en casa, donde cosechan verduras para hacer ensaladas y tener los aliños frescos para sus recetas. Yo seguí el dicho “Donde fueres haz lo que vieres” y también comencé con mi huerto.
En total he tenido tres huertos diferentes. El primero estaba situado en una ladera que se encontraba un poco lejos de casa y no tenía un buen acceso de agua, teníamos que regar las plantas con balde. Ese huerto lo cuidábamos una vecina y yo. La señora Irondina, mi vecina, me enseñó como cuidar cada plantica que sembrábamos. Este huerto llegó a su fin porque comenzaron a llegar unos animalitos de noche que se comían todo lo sembrado, nunca supe como se llamaban pero sé que son una especie de roedores.
The second garden I did next to a little house where I lived, with this one I already had more knowledge and the cultivation was much better. This garden was finally neglected because my baby was born and I spent three months away from home, so I could not enjoy its fruits.
El segundo huerto lo hice al lado de una casita donde vivía, con este ya tenía más conocimiento y el cultivo fue bastante mejor. Este huerto al final fue desatendido porque nació mi bebé y pasé tres meses fuera de casa, por lo que no pude disfrutar de sus frutos.
Now the last garden is next to my current house and is larger than the previous ones. Last year we planted a lot of vegetables, lettuce of various kinds, paprika, chili, eggplant, okra, chives, strawberries, cucumbers, carrots, pumpkins and tomatoes.
Actually our current garden consists of two parts, one place where the lettuce, relish and strawberries were planted; and another where the cucumbers and pumpkins are located. In both places there are okra and tomato plants.
Ahora el último huerto queda al lado de mi actual casa y tiene una mayor extensión que los anteriores. El año pasado sembramos bastantes verduras, lechugas de varios tipos, pimentón, ají, berenjena, quimbombó, cebollín, fresas, pepino, zanahoria, calabazas y tomate.
En realidad nuestro huerto actual consiste en dos partes, un lugar donde fueron plantadas las lechugas, aliños y fresas; y otro donde se encuentran los pepinos y calabazas. En ambos lugares hay plantas de quimbombó y de tomate.
Last year we had a problem with a flood and practically lost the orchard. There were three days of rain in a row and everything was flooded.
The garden was under water for a long time and we had to pull out some plants to save them, especially the strawberries, lettuce and cabbages. After the rain stopped, we had to wait for the springs that came up in the garden to stop so we could plant again what we had saved.
El año pasado tuvimos un problema con una inundación y prácticamente perdimos el huerto. Fueron tres días de lluvia seguidos que hicieron que todo se inundara.
El huerto estuvo bajo el agua bastante tiempo, tuvimos que sacar algunas plantas para poder salvarlas, en especial las fresas, lechugas y repollos. Luego que paró de llover hubo que esperar que los manantiales que afloraron en el huerto pararan para poder plantar de nuevo lo que habíamos salvado.
The rain washed away all the organic matter we had placed as compost so we had to replenish it. We composted everything again, planted what we saved and bought more seedlings to plant. After that we harvested a little bit of everything.
La lluvia lavó toda la materia orgánica que habíamos colocado como abono por lo que tuvimos que reponerla. Abonamos todo de nuevo, plantamos lo que salvamos y compramos más plántulas para sembrar. Después de eso hemos cosechado de todo un poco.
As my routine is a bit complicated, the garden is a way to de-stress. Normally my daughter accompanies me in the moments of care and she enjoys it a lot.
It is a very rewarding activity to plant your food, having the opportunity to see how the fruits grow from one day to the next is simply exciting.
Although there are still some crops that we are not good at, such as peppers, which this time we were not able to harvest practically nothing, or tomatoes, which we had many problems with pests, it is still a very good hobby. This year I plan to take a course to be able to optimize the production of my garden organically.
Como mi rutina es un poco complicada, el huerto es una forma de desestresarme. Normalmente mi hija me acompaña en los momentos de cuidados y ella lo disfruta bastante.
Es una actividad muy gratificante la de sembrar tus alimentos, el tener la oportunidad de ver como crecen los frutos de un día para otro, es simplemente emocionante.
Aunque aun hay cultivos que no se nos dan bien, como los pimentones que esta oportunidad no pudimos cosechar prácticamente nada, o el tomate que tuvimos muchos problemas con pestes, sigue siendo un pasatiempo muy bueno. Este año planeo hacer un curso para poder optimizar la producción de mi huerto de forma orgánica.
This week we are going to harvest the remaining pumpkins and remove all the plants that have died to fertilize the soil to start the fall and winter crops, which are totally different from the spring and summer ones. Esta semana vamos a cosechar las calabazas que nos quedan y quitaremos todos las plantas que se han muerto para abonar la tierra para darle inicio a los cultivos de otoño e invierno, que son totalmente diferentes que los de primavera y verano.
