Everyone thought I was a thief..for like five minutes
I know we've all had embarrassing moments, there are just some scenarios you look back at and cover your face with a pillow. Mine usually made me laugh.
Some embarrassing moments last a few seconds, mine lasted for five minutes. Five minutes that felt like a whole eternity .
As I can recall, a few years ago I was shopping in a very busy supermarket. My shopping cart was full with Chicken, mayonnaise, eggs, ketchup, cabbages, carrots, and more other greens. That day was unusually busy because it was the day before Easter. A lot of people were doing their Easter shopping.
After paying for the items at the check out section, I casually walked towards the exit . A security guard screamed loudly "Excuse me, please stop!." I was startled.
All the talking around me seemed to stop, all eyes were turned to my direction.
Because the alarm went off,two security guards came to check my bags, I knew I hadn't taken anything but the way I was being ransacked made me feel guilty in a way.
They searched my shopping bags, handbags, pockets. Nothing, they found nothing.

At that moment, I just wished the ground will open and swallow me. I just wanted to disappear. People were silently judging me, I could see it in their stagnant stares.
Then another employee rushed towards me, holding a security tag that had been left on one of the item I already paid for. That's why the alarm went off. It wasn't blaming me, it was reacting to the forgotten tag.
The guards apologized to me, and people smiled sympathetically. If this had gone further, that situation could have turned into a mistake, an expensive one. I laughed the situation off, but my cheeks still stayed red the rest of the day.
That experience made me realize how quickly we jump into conclusions about others. Looking back at that now, I know appearance can be deceiving, and that the one everyone suspects has done absolutely nothing wrong .
