The life of the party 🎂

If there was something Natalia loved, it was hosting parties, gatherings, and dinners for her friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. She felt like the life of the party simply by having everything ready and prepared for her guests. She loved being the perfect hostess, and it was in those moments that she felt her best and her sense of accomplishment blossomed.

For a week, Natalia had been preparing what might be the best party of the year and the event she had been most looking forward to—her 35th birthday. Natalia was very passionate about everything related to planning, and everything had to be perfect. On the day of the party, everything was polished to the finest detail: perfect catering, the best music, and a guest list studied down to the last detail. Natalia rushed from place to place asking guests what they needed, what would make them happy, if they liked the music or the snacks she had chosen. In the hustle and bustle between guests, drinks, and cheerful music, Natalia realized something... No one had congratulated her on her birthday, and in preparing everything else, she had forgotten something very important: preparing a birthday cake for herself.

Oh no! -said Natalia- I’m the worst hostess in the world. No one cares about my birthday, no one has wished me congratulations, and worst of all, there won’t be any candles to blow out.

Natalia sat in a corner with tears in her eyes, on the verge of crying. She thought about all the parties she had thrown over the year and how perfect they had turned out, but she also thought about how much she felt excluded from her own celebrations. If she was being honest with herself, she barely enjoyed them. Her presence was limited to ensuring everything went smoothly, making sure no one felt left out, and that everyone had a snack and a drink in hand while the music played.

A comment from one of her guests, a coworker, broke her train of thought. In a conversation nearby, she overheard someone saying:

Natalia is always busy. She’s the same way at the office. I’d love for her to calm down for a moment and just have a normal conversation.

Natalia realized that all this time she had been trying to be so perfect that she had forgotten to have fun and form deep connections with others. In her pursuit of making sure everything was in place and worrying about every little detail, she had stopped being herself and had turned into a mere robot.

This won’t go on -said Natalia- I’ll do something about it!

Natalia mustered up her courage and approached the group from her workplace that she had overheard talking about her just seconds ago. It didn’t take long for Natalia to find herself laughing amidst conversations and silly dance moves. She even spoke for the first time with a colleague who had recently joined and with whom, to her surprise, she had much in common.

As the night went on, Natalia realized everything she had been missing out on by being so obsessed with organization and perfection. She decided that from that moment on, things would be different. She couldn’t forgo fun and needed to learn to delegate tasks to others. She wasn’t a robot; she was human, and she deserved a break.

While everyone was enjoying themselves, especially Natalia, someone knocked on the door, and when it opened, the surprise was immense: María, Natalia’s best friend, who had been out of town for months due to work, was standing there. In her hands was a large birthday cake with candles, and with a big smile, everyone shouted in unison:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NATALIA!

Everyone was stunned, especially Natalia, who couldn’t hold back her tears.

Natalia, you never told us it was your birthday. You didn’t include it in the invitation -said her boss. And it was true. In the hustle and bustle of making everything perfect, she had forgotten to include her birthday on the invitation. She had thrown so many parties that she had been operating on autopilot. Everyone laughed and raised an improvised toast for Natalia. That night, Natalia learned to give herself permission to enjoy as just another guest. She realized she didn’t need to sacrifice herself to make others happy. She couldn’t be a great hostess if she always forgot herself. Being part of the party also meant bringing it to life with her own joy.

¡Oh no!
