At school, everything was measured. There were all sorts of tests for the children: reading, addition, dates, and drawing. Even tying their shoes was a challenge. But no one measured what Lucas could do. At seven years old, Lucas barely spoke more than two complete words. He liked to spend hours staring at the cracks in the ground. His teachers said he wasn't smart enough, good enough, or friendly enough. Making friends wasn't easy for Lucas. Everyone thought he didn't understand anything, not even games or songs.
But Lucas simply saw things differently. Where others saw a crack, he saw a fortress for an army of ants. Where everyone else wanted words, shouts, and games, Lucas preferred the serenity of silence, where thoughts make less noise. Where everyone else saw hugs, Lucas saw suffocation, and he didn't know how to respond. Lucas's intelligence was different; he was a normal child who thought differently. Perhaps it took him a little longer to reach the same level as others, but no one could remember better the order of the books that the teacher had placed on the table, no one could recount with such accuracy the last sunny day, or the steps from the garden to the school door.
