Most people I know are fairly well off in comparison to the majority of people living in Australia. They've lived lives of privilege, not to say they haven't worked hard, many have but they're undoubtedly a fair few floors above most from the onset. I'd include myself here too.
The point is people like me don't like to look at this too much. It not going to feel great reminding ourselves of this hidden guilt we've been dragging around with us day in and day out. It's the guilt of being on the better side of the class divide while pretending there is none.
We've got a nice and clean empathetic facade to upkeep, despite the truth being we don't really give a shit. But let's not talk about that, that looks very wrong, even to ourselves - nothing a Fairtrade latte in a recyclable paper cup won't remedy in an instant.
As it turns out, it's no problem, there's always a whole assortment of issues to talk about that won't require us to face this guilt of ours. We can easily sidestep this and still end up feeling morally superior - which is what really counts afterall. Like a supermarket of ready-made, class-safe issues, we can take our pick as we feel. There's racism, sexism, religious fundamentalism, crazy right-wingers, LGBTs discrimination, mistreated refugees, global warming, fake news... There's also a shiny loud and large one, perfectly named "Trump" - he's all those things personified in one rich old white male, adorned with fake tan and fake hair!
Remember, even though we're the world's biggest consumers of commercialism, we despise obvious signs of it, unless we put it in a gallery, call it Kitsch and sell it as an artwork for millions!
The point of the matter is this - we can't talk about being directly complicit in this class inequality that festers around us in our own cities and towns, actually across the entire world. We certainly can't acknowledge that we carry our own special brand of prejudice because of it and definitely not how we materially benefit from this inequality and the perpetual state of wars it requires either. These topics are wholly off-limits. If we hear any of such rubbish, may I suggest we cover our ears and cry out "fake news, fake news, fake news, fake news..."?
I'm going to call this neo-elitism because we love to put "neo" before other words, even when nothing new is actually occurring - case in point this is same old feeling of belonging to a superior culture that once justified colonialism and subjected one culture over and above all others just about everywhere and on everyone. We do it now under the guise of pluralism and Democracy - funny really, in a sick kind of way.
Could it be a symptom of our education system? At least that's what particularly inculcates us into it, especially after we complete university studies. That's when we're so indoctrinated into our own elitism, if completely impoverished, our elitism still remains unscathed - a real testament to how deep this type of propoganda runs in us.
Having said that... Trump is the end all of us all! Repent!
