Every evening, an old man sat on the same bench in the park, holding a small envelope in his hands. people often wondered who he was waiting for. one rainy afternoon, a young girl finally asked him, "are you waiting for someone?" he smiled and said, not anymore, i am just remembering someone. Inside the envelope was a letter he had written many years ago to his daughter. life had taken them in different directions, and had never found the courage to say everything he wanted to say. I thought i had plenty of time, he said quietly. the girl sat beside him and listened. after a moment, the old man looked at the letter and smiled. "we always think tomorrow will give us another chance. sometimes, tomorrow comes. sometimes, it does not." the girl asked, "then why do you still keep the letter?" he looked towards the empty path and replied because it reminds me that words left unsaid can become the heaviest things we carry." the girl thought for a moment and asked, "why don't you send it now?" the old man looked surprised. he had spend years believing that it was too late. that evening, he finally stood up, walked home, and placed the letter in an envelope with his daughter's address. the next morning he went to the post office. weeks passed.
Then one quiet afternoon, the old man returned to his usual bench. as he sat down, he heard someone call his name. he turned around. his daughter was standing there. for a moment, neither of them spoke. then she walked towards him and hugged him. i wish you had send this years ago, she wispered.
I wish i had too, he replied. they sat together on the bench as the sun slowly disappeared behind the trees. the old man realized that the letter had not changed the past but it had given them something precious:
ANOTHER CHANCE.
