One of the biggest pleasures in life is to start a fresh new day in the morning knowing that you have another chance to improve on yesterday.

People usually kinda' sorta' get it, but they're not very clear about what, and how to improve. We understand things could be better, but we are not sure what to do.

Generally speaking, we understand that good habits are good and bad habits are bad and so our main strategy is very basic: adopt more good habits while getting rid of bad habits. Pretty straightforward.

In the case you've ever struggled with this approach, it's because you cannot simply add some "good habits" and remove some "bad ones" without any consequences or repercussions on everything else in your life.

And that's because your habits are systems of support that exist for a reason, they fulfill very specific purposes in your life, and so you cannot rip them out and simply expect that things are just going to work.

Your daily habits should be viewed as a well oiled, working machine -where every moving part accomplishes something specific, it exists for a good reason and needs to be maintained religiously.

To understand this, it would be very useful to think about your habits as pieces of puzzle. In that sense they have a very specific shape and they fit in a very specific place and you cannot misplace them, or you cannot remove them without consequences on the overall image.

It's irrealistic to expect that your day should have only great perfect habits and no bad habits.
Your day should be made out of habits and routines that work well together. Period.

Things have to fit, because if they don't, you're not going to be able to stick to your habits.

A good example of this is a cheat day(bad habit) that some people maintaining a diet know how important it is for being able to stick to their diet.

What's even more sometimes, even if you have some things in order working well together, if you throw some new habits in, it will tend to destabilize everything else.

And that's because you didn't consider that habits have relationships and interactions.

Habits are not to be adopted arbitrarily just because they work for somebody else, you have to still make an effort to see where and how you can fit them.
