The body can crave calm after so much agitation. And right now, in that quiet space, I want to remember that within just six months, my country went through a bombing and a devastating double earthquake.
Both events, traumatic for everyone, have deeply affected how I relate to myself, to my surroundings, to people, to art, to my pets, to my work.
My body reacts drastically to any hint of threat. A slight shift in objects around me, the loud roar of the southern wind hitting my window, and above all, those indescribable sounds that the earthquake seared into my memory. Sounds I recall with brutal clarity and feel I can mimic perfectly with my voice. I call them "the creaking of the mountains." They sound like prolonged thunder, but without the rain.
I consider myself incredibly lucky. All my loved ones survived. My home is still standing. And yet, every day I wake up with a distant unease: the fear of losing those I love at any moment.
The mountains that held me, that view of the range I used to enjoy every morning, are now fractured, marked by landslides. The mountain that gave me peace, that predates me by millions of years and that I once believed would remain unchanged, now bears scars. And this has reshaped me in ways I still can't fully measure.
The mountain is wounded, just as I am, just as we all are. And all we can do now is hold each other.
