Controlling people can't control themselves. Isn't that ironic?
By fate, karma, or mere chance, I have met and lived with some controlling people in my life. It's always interesting to note that this type of person is usually very out of control. People with this characteristic, in general, talk a lot about themselves, are inconvenient, and say things without thinking. At least the ones I have met follow this pattern. They are people who are always ready to criticize, who judge with great ease, and who, even if they understand how badly they are treating others and how terrible their behavior is, simply cannot control themselves. It's as if their vision is so focused on others, on the external, that there is no attention left to analyze themselves. It's sad to see, it's sad to live with, but that's usually how it goes.
When you have a boyfriend or girlfriend with this characteristic, it's easier, even though it's difficult for the person living through it. But you can simply end the relationship and seek therapy to deal with the damage. When it comes to your parents, it's much worse, because even if you move out, but still have a certain relationship with them and have to see them with some frequency, every time you visit, you will leave with some scratch or feel your scars caused by countless situations like this burn, ache, like what happens to Harry Potter when Voldemort is near.
My advice is: distance yourself as much as possible from people like that. It's not worth it. Sometimes it's not even worth helping this type of person, because at the first opportunity they will trip you up. But we also need to look at ourselves and ask: Am I a controlling person? It may be uncomfortable to face our own faults, but it is necessary if we want to be good people for those we love and for ourselves as well. Especially if you have or intend to have children, discovering if you are a controlling person will save your child's psychological health. Finding out whether or not you are this type of person will be one of the main aspects that will define whether your child will be emotionally strong or full of insecurities and fears.
The truth is that getting rid of a controlling person is not such a simple task, especially if you have a strong bond with that person. However, it is fundamental if we want to live a happy life. Always remember that your life is your life, no one should dictate what you should do, how you should act or how you should dress. These people don't know how to live their own lives. Their lives are usually uninteresting and they don't love their own lives, so they try to control everything and everyone.
If you live with people like that and for some reason can't distance yourself yet, I recommend you seek therapy and never give up on following your own path. Remember: You deserve to be happy.
