I remember to this day the moment John told me about the experience his brother had as a child. We were on the balcony of his apartment, smoking cigarettes. The afternoon was beautiful, with evening approaching in a few minutes. The sky displayed the twilight colors that I love so much, and I felt serene.
John looked at me for a few seconds with his usual mysterious expression and asked, "So, have you had any new paranormal experiences?"
I replied that I hadn't and asked the same of him. John and I share a similarity in this regard; we are not religious, but we have both encountered many strange experiences. Especially John, who, despite being a skeptic, has even had an episode of possession. Knowing about our sensitivity to perceive things that not everyone sees or feels, we periodically update each other. So, that question was not strange to me; it was a question that almost always came up when we met.
"You know, recently Carl told me a story about himself that left me intrigued. And I definitely wouldn't believe it if it were someone else telling me, but it's my brother... I can't doubt my brother."
I asked what it was about, already knowing I would hear something challenging. Carl, like John, had an immense ability to see manifestations from the spiritual world. When he was a child, he had to deal with ghosts wandering through his house day and night; no one in the family believed him except John, who shared the same predisposition.
I did not imagine that what John would tell me next would leave me so impacted. Especially because for some years, I had become increasingly skeptical about these matters. When reading, hearing, or seeing any story about ghosts, demons, or UFOs, the first thing I do is question the situation as much as possible so that logical and rational solutions can emerge. Only then, when I see no rational way out, do I give myself the choice to believe or not. Developing this mindset was very useful so that I wouldn't be deceived either by myself or by others. However, the story John told me about Carl was definitely different from anything I had ever heard.
"Carl told me that one night, when he was 14 years old, he went to bed and woke up in the past when he was 10. The things that happened after the age of 10 were repeated in Carl's life; he already knew everything that would happen. Carl traveled back in time."
When he finished telling me, I felt breathless. I couldn't hide my surprise and fascination with that story, but after a few seconds, when my internal excitement calmed down, I raised some questions.
"He could have imagined it."
"But how would he know everything that would happen in the next four years?"
"What if he confused the memory? Or if it was just a dream? He might be schizophrenic."
"My brother is not schizophrenic, Eli. I believe him; Carl was really strange at that time; he predicted things. Now it makes sense."
"But why would your brother go back in time? How did he manage to do that in his sleep? What's the purpose?"
"I don't know, but that's what happened."
I left two hours after we had that conversation. The story John told me left me pensive, and I spent the rest of the night reflecting on what would happen if I went back in time just by sleeping and waking up. Would the decisions I change alter everything in my life? Would it change who I am today, change the choices I made? These questions frightened me; there are things I would like to change, of course... but there are things I would go crazy if I lost. As I lay in bed, I was afraid, afraid to close my eyes and wake up four years earlier, afraid to return to being a child... but I also wished for it.

A tarde estava bonita, dali a poucos minutos iria anoitecer, o céu tinha aquelas cores do crepúsculo que tanto gosto, eu me sentia sereno.
Carl voltou no tempo.’’
