Greenland whales during the breeding season perform more than a hundred different songs. This discovery was made by scientists from the University of Washington.
Animals, according to scientists, sing "day and night" throughout the mating season from November to March. In the songs biologists have discovered certain patterns, which were occasionally repeated only in one winter. Every year whales "compose" new music to attract partners. "Songs" performed by animals are different from the songs of other whales.
"If the songs of humpback whales are like classical music, then the Greenland whales are like jazz," said oceanographic researcher, the head of the group.
The males of other species sing the same songs in the mating season, which do not differ in such variety. In total, scientists managed to record 184 songs of marine mammals.
The article also notes that the singing of bowhead whales has changed over the years. The causes of this phenomenon are unknown, the scientists intend to address this problem in the future.
The Greenland whale is included in the Red Book of Russia. The current population is estimated at 10,000 individuals, mostly in the Chukchi and Bering seas.
