The atmosphere is an amazing part of our ecosystem. Not only does it hold the gases that we need to survive on the planet, it also protects us from space debris. For instance, when a comet or asteroid impacts our atmosphere it breaks up into smaller parts. Air feels like a solid wall of steel when impacted from a vacuum at the high velocities objects in space travel at.
The smaller pieces continue to burn up as they're decelerated by our atmosphere until most of them completely burn out and never make it to land or water. Such is the amazing shield that we already have enveloping the planet.
Some solid pieces do make it to the ground though. They are called meteorites. The sound they make, and the flash of light generated by the energy transfer from kinetic to heat and light, resembles thunder and lightning.
This is understandably why Edun Ara, Shango's stone darts that he throws, are often mistaken for meteorites. The characteristic difference is that Edun Ara stones are usually much smoother and symmetrical than meteorites.
When Shango fires a lightning bolt, he actually throws a stone dart that's electrically charged to an extremely high voltage. As it propels, it' garners speed by being perpetually struck by lightning until it hits the target.
Vibranium is the hardest known material on earth and virtual superconductor. Steeman has no soul, as such is immune to metaphysical attacks. The microfibre suit is what prevented him from being vaporised by Shango's strike by evenly distributing and absorbing the kinetic energy and electrical charge.
