Solution.
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances
It is formed when one substance dissolves in another substance. a substance that dissolves another substance is called a solvent why a substance that dissolves in another substance is called a solute.
To give you a proper and clear explanation,
Solute +solvent = Solution.
That is: A solute dissolve in a solvent to give a solution. The dissolved solute particles in a liquid solution are called crystalloids. Crystalloid are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye.
A solid can be a solid liquid or gas also a solvent can be a solid liquid or gas. Usually the solvent is always present in a larger population than the sold within the solution.
we all know that the commonest solvent is water it is a liquid what does alcohols petrol kerosene and carbon disulphide.
Saturated and unsaturated solution.
when is small quantity of a solid such as granulated sugar is placed in a beaker containing a known volume of water and the mixture is stirred, the solute dissolved to give a colourless solution.
As more of the solute is added to the solution with stiring it dissolved.
However a stage is reached in which the solute no longer dissolve in the solution.
a solution in which the solute can no longer dissolve in the presence of undissolved solute at a given temperature is said to be saturated.
while a solution which is still capable of dissolving more solute at a particular temperature is said to be unsaturated.
Dilute and concentrated solutions.
a solution which contains a small quantity of a solute dissolved in a large quantity of the solvent is said to be dilute, while is solution which contains a large quantity of the solute dissolved in a small volume of the solvent is said to be concentrated.
Properties of a liquid solution.
A dilute solution of common salt in water is a typical example of a true solution:
(1). A liquid solution is either colourless or coloured but transparent (not opaque).
(2). Is colour and composition are homogeneous.
(3). the dissolved solute particles in a solution crystalloid do not settle down and standing the solution it is a true solution.
(4). the particle sizes of crystalloid are too small to be seen with the naked eye hence a true solution will not scatter a beam of light that passes through it.
Suspension.
Now that we have gotten the idea and we understand about solution let's look at what suspension really means.
A suspension is a mixture in which the particles of the solid are neither soluble or insoluble but suspended such a mixture is heterogeneous.
Examples.
(1). Muddy water is a suspension of clay particles in water
(2). Sandstorm is a suspension of dust and fine sand in air
(3). Milk of magnesia is a suspension of a compound of magnesium called magnesium hydroxide in water.
The particles in a suspension called sediment.
Properties of a suspension.
Let's look and take muddy water as a key example of a suspension.
(1). Its colour and composition are not uniform.
(2). The particles is a suspension which is called a sediment can be seen with the naked eye
(3). the settlement will settle down due to gravity by process called sedimentation.
So we will be stopping here today and hope to continue from here next time.
