Good morning, friends and readers of stemsocial@stemsocial, and the rest of the Hive community.

We continue working on our Irrigation System Project for tobacco cultivation. We have taken a few days because the project is quite extensive. Today, we will present the hydraulic calculation of the entire irrigation network. This is the essence of every project: the design concept and the calculations through which we determine the dimensions of our work.

Construction of the Hydraulic Model.

>Construcci贸n del modelo hidr谩ulico.

As on previous occasions, since we will be working with a pressurized hydraulic network, that is, one that operates with pipes running completely full under pressure, we will use our excellent WaterGEMS software. Therefore, in this case, we will follow a series of logical steps to build and design the network.

1- The first thing we do is configure our software to work with the International System of Units, which is the system used in our country. To do this, we use the toolbar and select the SI option.

2- We will now import our background map or diagram into the software. This will serve as a guide for tracing the hydraulic network. This way, we will avoid the headache of drawing pipes or placing any model elements over houses, rivers, or other locations where they should not be when construction begins. To do this, we go to the lower-left corner, to the "Background Layer" window, create a new element, and import our background plan, which we had previously saved in DXF format from the drawing itself in AutoCAD. As shown in the image, everything is now ready to begin building our hydraulic model.

3- Next, we will build the hydraulic network, which consists of the following elements:

NODES: These represent changes in direction, pipe junctions, water consumption points, and hydrants.

LINKS: These represent the pipes.

RESERVOIR: This represents an unlimited water source.

PUMPS AND VALVES: As their names indicate, these elements represent water pumps and shut-off or control valves, respectively.

To place these elements in the drawing area, we use one of two methods. In the Home tab, we click the Layout icon, and the mouse pointer will take the shape of a small filled circle. We then click along the pipe layout to create the pipe network. Whenever we need to switch to another element, we right-click with the mouse, and a list of all the elements we can select to build our network will appear.

L脥NEAS: representan las tuber铆as.

4- Once the entire network has been drawn, we begin the process of loading the model data. This consists of assigning water consumption values to the nodes. These values are calculated based on the number of sprinklers on each lateral. For example, if we know the position of an operating lateral, we calculate its water consumption by adding up the number of sprinklers on that lateral and multiplying this number by the flow rate of one sprinkler. Remember that in the previous post, we specified that the operating flow rate of each sprinkler was 0.22 L/s. Therefore, if our lateral has 10 sprinklers, the water consumption at that point is 2.2 L/s. Similarly, if the field has two laterals, we will have two consumption points. For mathematical modeling purposes, we generally use the end point and the midpoint located along the distribution pipe.

5- Once we have completed this entire process, we use the node table to add up all the water demands and determine the flow rate required at our pumping station. In this case, remember that the station will consist of three electric pumps, so we divide the total flow rate obtained by three to determine the actual unit flow rate for each pumping unit, which is 68.65 L/s, as shown in the image. However, we always assign a slightly higher value, for example, 70 L/s, bearing in mind that no hydraulic network is completely watertight.

6- Next, we carry out the final step before performing the calculations: assigning elevations to the nodes and pumping equipment. Fortunately, this is done automatically; otherwise, we would spend a considerable amount of time assigning elevations to the nodes one by one. To do this, we will use the TRex tool. We go to the Tool tab in WaterGEMS and click the TRex icon. In the dialog box that appears, as shown in the image, we select the parameters one by one from the drop-down menus. In this case, we will use the DXF Contours option, selecting the DXF file that we previously saved from AutoCAD. For this process to work correctly, this file must contain only contour lines with elevation values. Finally, using triangulation, the software assigns elevations to the nodes based on their positions relative to the contour lines on which or between which they are located.

7- Once this is completed, and based on the elevation data, we assign a tentative operating head to the pumping equipment. Then, using Darwin Designer, we assign pipe diameters, run the calculations, and examine the results. We gradually adjust the pressure head parameters at the pumping equipment until we obtain pressures as close as possible to those required at the system hydrants. We also adjust pipe diameters wherever conditions require it. Once this process is complete, our hydraulic calculations are fully finished, and the next step will be to begin preparing the final drawings for our project. In the images, we can see the complete network clearly drawn with the background map turned off, as well as the hydraulic parameters of the pipes and a simplified profile of the main supply pipeline.

This concludes the presentation of this post. We have tried to make it as concise as possible, which is somewhat difficult given the number of steps involved. Many thanks to our readers for their patience and attention. All images and the written content are entirely my own work.
