Diagnóstico y solución / Retrieving a friend's phone in distress. MICOM mobile in shutdown / cutoff. Diagnosis and solution.
Good afternoon to the great
@geekzone community and the rest of Hive.
We continue with the repairs at the workshop. Today is Sunday, but having the workplace at home can sometimes be a disadvantage. Although it is our day off, a customer, family member, or friend always comes with some urgent need. Today we bring you the case of a MYCOM mobile phone. A friend brings it because it does not turn on. He had a good modern phone that he was using, but its screen broke. Now he wants to use this one, which he had stored away, while he repairs the other one, but it does not turn on.
We will proceed as always: first we will perform the diagnosis and then, if it is within our capabilities, we will carry out the repair.»
DIAGNÓSTICO
DIAGNOSIS
1-First, we will remove the back cover. These keypad phones are easy to open, at least to access the battery. We remove it and are going to measure it; it should have at least 3.6 V for the phone to turn on. We will use our multimeter on the DC voltage scale. We place the red probe on the positive terminal of the battery and the black probe on the negative terminal. We take the measurement and observe 17.0 mV. So, at the moment, the battery is very, very discharged, which is a negative point. With this voltage, the phone will not turn on.
2-At first, since the battery is even below the minimum threshold, we suspect that it is damaged or that the phone has some kind of short circuit or leakage that completely drained it. So, we are going to measure the reference values at the battery pins to check whether any of these events is occurring. We set our multimeter to diode mode, place the red probe on any ground point of the phone, and the black probe on the positive battery pin. We take the measurement and find the first problem: our multimeter gives us 0.004 V. This means that one of the components between the positive battery pin and the voltage regulator or PMIC is shorted; it could even be the PMIC itself. We measure the negative pin and obtain 0.003 V, which is correct.
3-We will perform one final test to make sure that there is a short circuit or major leakage in the main line that prevents the phone from turning on. We will use our power supply, regulated to 4 V and 2 A, with OCP activated, which is the power supply's overcurrent protection. We connect the probes according to their polarity to the battery connector. Immediately, the power supply emits a sound and shuts down, confirming that there is a total short circuit on the phone's main line.
4-We have done all of this with the phone closed; now we will have to open it completely. With the phone disassembled, the strategy will now be to inject voltage to find which component is shorted. So, we are going to disable the OCP on the power supply so that it does not shut down. We connect the power supply probes again according to their polarity to the battery connector, and we see the red indicator showing a total consumption of 2.117 A. Now, we quickly touch the entire board with the palm of our hand until we find the area that is heating up. We have already identified it: the area that gets very hot is behind the battery connector itself, so that is where the problem is.
5-Next, we have to identify exactly which component it is. Using a thermal camera is the fastest way to identify it, but they are quite expensive. We will use what we have within our reach, which also gives good results, as we have done on other occasions: the Rosin technique. So, with our hot soldering iron, we dip it into the rosin and pass the smoke it produces over the area that is heating up until the components gradually become coated in white. Once they are well coated, we perform the same test by connecting the phone to the power supply. We turn it on and, within milliseconds, we see that of the two capacitors on the rear side of the battery connector, the smaller one is the one that changes color. So, we have identified the problem: a shorted ceramic capacitor. With this, we conclude our diagnosis.
REPARACIÓN
REPAIR
1-First, having already identified the shorted component, we are going to remove it. Since it is a small component, we carefully remove it with our soldering iron.
2-We are going to measure the reference value at the positive terminal of the battery connector again. We proceed in the same way as in step 2 of the diagnosis, take the measurement, and there we have it: 0.479 V. This value is correct. So, we have removed the short circuit from the phone. Since the removed capacitor was connected in parallel and is a minor component, the phone should turn on if there are no other faults.
3-To be completely sure, we will proceed in a similar way to step 3 of the diagnosis. We connect the phone to our power supply and, as we observe that there is no longer any current consumption and the power supply does not trip, we press the power button and, there we go, the phone has turned on. So, we have successfully completed our repair.
4-Everything is ready. We assemble the phone, charge the battery, and hand the phone back to our friend, who was very satisfied, especially because he does not have the budget to repair his other phone.
This is where this repair process ends. Technically speaking, the correct procedure, in addition to removing the damaged component, is to replace it with one in good condition. However, it is quite common not to have the necessary spare parts, and since the exact characteristics of the damaged component are not known for certain, we remove it and leave it at that. If the phone turns on this way, then it is done.
