Many times we humans believe that we are the only ones who can live a grieving process, but every day I am more convinced that for animals there is also a grieving process that is often difficult to overcome.
I presume that you as well as I have seen videos of dogs or cats depressed by the death of their humans or other pets that lived with them, one is surprised, but believes that they are sometimes isolated cases, that we will not have to witness something like that, but I have seen my cats missing their departed species.
Now, last week, a few hours after publishing the anguish I was living with my Akiles, he passed away, it was not easy for me to see him die slowly, but I accompanied him until the end, because in such a hard moment, it was what he needed and deserved, to be with those who loved him and loved him until his last breath.
Even though burying him hours later was hard, I know he rested and that gives me comfort, but since that day and until a few days ago, my other cats had and still have a strange behavior.
I started noticing that they did not want to be near the sofa, a place they used to fight over, I think it is because he spent part of his convalescence there and died on it and although I cleaned it thoroughly and for me it has no odors, they have a much better sense of smell than me and it was only until two days ago that I started to see them there again, first they just climbed, sniffed and also looked for the places where Akiles used to lie down.
On the other hand, Mr. Cat, showed to be very restless for about three days, he went in and out of the room and walked around the house as if looking for him, the truth caused me sadness and concern to see him like that, because if he gets stressed it is likely to give him cystitis so we try to fill him with love to calm him down.
In the same way, in the window since two years ago I placed some plastic baskets with pillows so they could sunbathe and sleep there, usually Señor Gato, Pocholo and Akiles were in the place, sometimes one in each basket or sometimes Akiles who was suffering from cold would get in with one of his adopted brothers.
But now Señor Gato and Pocholo felt so lonely that they even shared a basket and that surprised me because Señor Gato and Pocholo tolerated each other, but they didn't get along very well, and sometimes Señor Gato and Rusa would look for him to play, because the three of them would run around the house every morning.
Certainly, Akiles was a special kitty, well, all cats are, each one is unique in its own way, he always made himself felt, he was intense and insistent, so since he is gone, the house feels very quiet and lonely, sometimes I think he would come to my bed as he did every morning looking for a nap next to me.
Sometimes I also think I hear him meowing or I see another of my cats coming and if I don't look closely I think it's him coming to ask for affection or food and not to mention if I look out and see my neighbor's yellow cat the first impression is that it's my Akiles.
In conclusion, when we lose a pet that we consider part of the family, it is normal to feel sad, cry and go through a grieving process, for each one of us it will take a different time and it is necessary to live it.
