Chinese New Year's Eve

Hi Steemians,

Today is Chinese/Lunar New Year's Eve. It is the last day of the year of the Rooster and next year, we will welcome the year of the Dog. We celebrated the last day of 2017 with a big feast with our family. My in-laws spent the entire day preparing a menu of traditional dishes and delicacies for us to enjoy, and of course, my children have also started receiving laisees (red pockets/利是) from family and friends today.

The traditional festive favourites that we feasted on tonight were:

• steamed fish
• poached chicken
• roast duck
• roast pork
• various dishes containing traditional ingredients, many of which carry symbolic meanings, such as abalone, dried mussels, fish maw, black moss and shitake mushrooms
• and finally, not pictured, we had delicious lotus root and pork soup on the side, and glutinous rice dumplings (湯圓) for dessert.

There will be more exciting festivities and celebrations in the week ahead to celebrate the new year, and I hope to share those with you.
