In 2018 we went to the Island of Roatán off the coast of Honduras. It's a very relaxing, laid-back place and the natural beauty is stunning.

We stayed at the Media Luna Resort although we aren't usually for all-inclusive resorts, this place was perfect. There were about as many staff as guests and the location was remote, you could not walk to any other resort or place. The grounds were very well maintained and the food was much better than your average all-inclusive. There wasn't much of a party scene, for that you would have to go to the other end of the island, which was at least a 30-minute drive.

The most impressive thing about the resort and Roatán was that about 30 meters off the beach was an unbelievable coral reef. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the Caribbean and the resort does not use harsh chemicals or bug sprays so the coral was in pristine condition. Every day we went snorkeling, seeing hundreds of different types of corals, fish, turtles, stingrays, etc. Most of the people staying at the resort were SCUBA divers. It was very impressive to say the least, I have been to many different places including SE Asia and have not seen something that beautiful so accessible from a resort before.

Not your typical all-inclusive buffet, the food was amazing!

The grounds were pristine, filled with flowers, lizards, birds, and some rodents. The cat and birds were in a zoo on French Key, which we visited when we hired a driver for the day to see the Island.
Our resort was on the east end of the island, the party side was on the West End of Roatán. If you are looking for nightlife and a good time, that's were you should go. There were shops, bars, clubs, etc. The island had chocolate, coffee and rum tours, and a few adventure sports. Cruise ships often stop at Roatán and I highly recommend visiting the Island. I imagine it's a lot like Jamaica and have heard people draw a comparison. It's definitely not like mainland Honduras and was safe (despite the heavily armed guards at the gas station)

All in all, I highly recommend visiting Roatán and cannot wait for our next Caribbean vacation!
