Stress and Sleep-What's the Connection?

Ok I know it could probably win the first prize in the contest "state the obvious" but still it is one thing to suspect something and another to prove it. In a research lead in the university of Tsukuba there were found neurons that connect sleep and emotions such as excitement or fear.
The experiments were conducted in mice. More specificly they were stimulation the GABA neurons in he bed nucleus of the stria terminalis
Noteworthy is that the stimulation of the neurons lead to sleep deprivation only if the mice weren't in the REM stage of sleep.
The mice that were in the REM stage seemed unaffected.
