alternatetext

Boogie Nights is a 1997 American period comedy-drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film is set in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley and follows the story of a young nightclub dishwasher who becomes a popular star of pornographic films, chronicling his rise in the Golden Age of Porn of the 1970s through his fall during the excesses of the 1980s. The film is based on a mockumentary short film that Anderson wrote and directed while he was still in high school called The Dirk Diggler Story, which was based on the 1981 documentary Exhausted: John C. Holmes, The Real Story, about the life of legendary porn actor John Holmes, on whom Dirk Diggler is based.

The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, and Heather Graham. Boogie Nights is grounded in strong characters, bold themes, and subtle storytelling, making it a groundbreaking film for both Director P.T. Anderson and star Mark Wahlberg. The film has been praised for its matter-of-fact portrayal of the pornography industry, which is depicted as a business rather than a dalliance or pastime.

Boogie Nights has received critical acclaim and has been compared to Robert Altman's "Nashville" and "The Player". Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle stated, Boogie Nights is the first great film about the 1970s to come out since the '70s ... It gets all the details right, nailing down the styles and the music". The film has a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It can be watched with a subscription on Showtime, Paramount Plus, rented on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, and Apple TV, or bought on Amazon Prime Video and others. The film has an IMDb Rating of 7.9/10. The original release of Boogie Nights in 1997 through New Line Cinema was presented on 35mm with digital sound (Dolby Digital and SDDS).
