alternatetext

Annie Hall is a 1977 American satirical romantic comedy-drama film directed by Woody Allen from a screenplay written by Allen and Marshall Brickman, and produced by Allen's manager, Charles H. Joffe. The film stars Allen as Alvy Singer, who tries to figure out the reasons for the failure of his relationship with the eponymous female lead, played by Diane Keaton in a role written specifically for her.

The film received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for the Big Five Academy Awards, winning four: the Academy Award for Best Picture, two for Allen (Best Director and, with Brickman, Best Original Screenplay), and Best Actress for Keaton. The film additionally won four BAFTA awards and a Golden Globe, the latter being awarded to Keaton.

Annie Hall ultimately earned $38,251,425 ($185 million in 2022 dollars) in the United States and Canada against a $4-million budget, making it the 11th highest-grossing picture of 1977. On raw figures, it currently ranks as Allen's fourth-highest-grossing film in the United States, after Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Midnight in Paris.

The film is considered a classic American film and is widely regarded as one of Woody Allen's best works. It has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its performances, writing, and direction

Originally slated and filmed as a New York murder mystery with a romantic subplot, Annie Hall was taken by editor Ralph Rosenbaum and cut down into the modern, witty 1970s screwball comedy that we still enjoy today. It is truly amazing that such an extensive post-production reshaping had no obvious ill effects on the General flow of the film, though the structure in itself is so hectic that we probably wouldn't notice it, anyway.

Plot

The film examines the rise and fall of his relationship with struggling nightclub singer Annie Hall (Diane Keaton), a neurotic, twice-divorced, intellectual Jewish New York City stand-up comic, and Annie Hall, an insecure, flighty, Midwestern WASP aspiring nightclub singer.

Speaking directly to the audience in front of a bare background, Singer reflects briefly on his childhood and his early adult years before settling in to tell the story of how he and Annie met, fell in love, and struggled with the obstacles of modern romance, mixing surreal fantasy sequences with small moments of emotional drama.

Alvy and Annie meet and fall in love. They struggle with the differences in their personalities and backgrounds. He reflects on his past relationships and his own neuroses. Annie and Alvy tRY to cook lobsters together, leading to a famous scene.

The relationship begins to fall apart, with Alvy wanting Annie to have sex without marijuana but she is too distant. Alvy travels with Annie to her family. They break up in a fight. Alvy tries to start a new relationship but with no success. After a while, Annie calls him and they start again.
