United Artists (UA) was an American film production and distribution company founded in 1919 by D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks as a venture premised on allowing actors to control their own interests rather than being dependent upon commercial studios. It was one of the earliest and most successful independent film studios in Hollywood.

In the 1920s, UA produced and distributed a number of classic films, including Chaplin's The Gold Rush (1925), Fairbanks' The Thief of Bagdad (1924), Pickford's Stella Dallas (1925), and Griffith's Way Down East (1920). The studio also released films by other notable directors, such as Erich von Stroheim, Ernst Lubitsch, and King Vidor.

UA continued to produce and distribute successful films in the 1930s and 1940s, including such classics as 8Some Like It Hot* (1959), The Apartment (1960), and West Side Story (1961). In the 1950s, the studio began to experience financial difficulties, and it was sold to Transamerica Corporation in 1967.

Under Transamerica ownership, UA continued to produce and distribute a number of successful films in the 1970s and 1980s, including Rocky (1976), Annie Hall (1977), Raging Bull (1980), and Amadeus (1984). However, the studio also released a number of flops, and it was sold to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1981.

MGM retained the United Artists brand for its independent film division, which continued to produce and distribute films until the early 2000s. In 2005, MGM announced that it would be retiring the United Artists brand. However, the brand was revived in 2019 for a new joint distribution venture between MGM and Annapurna Pictures.

United Artists has played a major role in the history of Hollywood. The studio's films have entertained and inspired audiences for generations. UA has also been associated with some of the most iconic and influential filmmakers and actors in Hollywood history.

In addition to the films mentioned above, UA has also produced and distributed many other notable films, including:

  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
  • Network (1976)
  • Midnight Cowboy (1969)
