By far the most popular time to do landscape photography is golden hour. This is the hour after sunrise or sunset. It is so called because of the golden hue of the sun at this time period. The light condition is also highly desired by photographers shooting romantic portraits - say of an engagement or wedding. It's easy to see why. The warm, golden glow of the sun rays do add a certain kind of magic, especially if the scene is set on a beach, in a desert or flatlands.
For me, I find the hour just after sunset, or just before it, more alluring. After sunset for instance, the loud burst of gold settles down and gives way to more subtle pastel colours in the sky. The effect is even more highlighted if you have layers such as hazy clouds, mountains, water, vegetation, e.t.c., in the scene.
I took the above photo on the ancient Island of Rhodes (Rodos) just after a particularly beautiful sunset. It had been a very hot day, so the sun going down was quite appreciated in more ways than one.
