The Great Lake Taupo

IMG_4797.jpg
This is Lake Taupo, a magnificent natural attraction in the Central Plateau at the North Island in New Zealand. It is the largest lake in New Zealand by surface area; with an area of 616 square kilometers, roughly the size of Singapore. It is the caldera of a then-supervolcano Taupo Volcano which erupted hundreds of thousands of years ago.

At present, it is a popular spot for sailing, fishing, and kayaking. With its large area coverage spanning across several towns and districts, each of those places offer distinct activities to enjoy the lake. The town of Turangi for instance, has the largest trout fishery in the world. People of all ages enjoy biking, running, and walking along the lake side.

The photo features a group of men riding the waka, a Māori canoe. Partially seen in the background is Mt Taranaki, a snow-capped mountain situated in the Taranaki region.
