1. The Soul Body

"The first body is called the Soul Body. This is your β€œinner self”. It is the voice that speaks to you and guides you on the path of your true purpose, that feels in harmony with all life. In the yogic tradition, the soul is an actual β€œthing”. While it is inter-dimensional, it has weight in this world, just less than an ounce. When a person passes away, the Soul Body is encased in the Subtle Body (which records all your deeds, words, actions) and they travel onward to the next level of your incarnation. Once the Soul Body has β€œleft” the physical body, the weight is less. Hence, the 1st body, is both completely spiritual and a completely real." -Check out more on the soul body here

To master the soul body it is fundamental that we link in and open the heart. The heart is our gateway and our bridge from the earth and ego realms to the soul realm. This is where we find our inner truth and begin to live from our intuition and truest self. It is the space of compassion and love that is linked in to our truest calling and destiny manifested from the soul.

So, what should we practice to connect to our soul body? Well, first we must strengthen our root chakra and navel center. Then begin to practice kriyas that open the heart and clear the channel from our root chakra that exists at the end of the spine and moves up the spine out to top of the head at our crown chakra. A good kriya to practice is Sat Kriya. It awakens the Kundalini energy at the base of the spine as well as clearing blockages throughout our energy centers. -[Learn Sat Kriya and start practicing by clicking here] ()

2. Negative (Protective) Mind

"The second body is known as the negative mind. Its role is very powerful and often misunderstood. It is the part of the brain which reacts negatively to everything it encounters. It’s ultimate role is to preserve and protect us. It calculates risk and finds potential pitfalls to keep us from harm. Its absolutely impossible for it to respond positively to anything; that is the role of the positive mind (or 3rd body). While it is a part of the three minds (positive, negative and neutral), the 2nd body holds a very important relationship with the Subtle body and the Soul Body. When the negative mind is out of proportion, we become full of anxiety, fear and self-doubt. Yogi Bhajan taught that doubt was the enemy of the human. A negative mind that is too strong can overwhelm the positive and neutral minds and interrupt the flow between the Soul Body and the Subtle Body, leaving you disconnected and sad. A negative mind that is too weak can leave you exposed to danger and foolish decisions. Along with balanced 3rd and 4th bodies, one with a balanced 2nd body then has the ability to make calm and clear decisions." -Check out more on the negative mind here

To understand the negative mind it is important that we create space in our lives where we are listening. In order to listen we must first learn what it means to go within. A great practice for this is meditation. Meditation allows us into a space where we get to meet our three minds: negative mind, positive mind, and neutral mind. When we meet our negative mind we get the opportunity to understand what it has been saying to us in a beneficial protective way but also a detrimental and self sabotage way. Once we begin to meet our negative mind in meditation we are able to bring in more input using the positive mind. We then can also release subconscious baggage further allowing us to then fall into the space of the neutral (meditative) mind.

Something Gurushabd, one of my Kundalini yoga teachers, taught me is, "If you are enjoying your meditations then you are doing them wrong."

So, what are some ways we can meet our negative mind consciously so we can begin a shift within us? Well, make sure you are practicing meditation styles and kriyas that challenge you. Start pushing yourself more so you have the opportunity to witness when your negative mind start inputting information like, "Ouch! This really hurts please stop!" or "Did you really just put your arms down in the middle of this kriya? Are you seriously that weak?"

Then, once the negative mind begins to surface we meditate through it bringing our attention back to the breath and inputting how capable we are if necessary. By continuing these practices we gain mental strength and endurance and slow slow the practices become a bit easier. We also give ourselves the opportunity to become less reactionary and more resilient to situations where the negative mind may generally take control in our day to day lives.

Once we have met our negative mind it is important to then strengthen the positive mind to counterbalance. When we strengthen the positive mind then the negative mind has less control. -[Checkout and practice this kriya for strengthening the positive mind here]

3. Positive (Expansive) Mind

"It’s qualities are positivity, equality and trust. The positive mind sees the good in everything. It’s job is to calculate what is going right. It keeps the light shining strong no matter how dark things get.
When your positive mind is strong, you have a good sense of humor and a strong sense of hope. You are full of bliss and joy and ready to succeed and take life on. The positive mind corresponds to the navel center, to the seat of will, so a strong positive mind leads you to be action-oriented and organized. Your body is fit and your mind is sharpest. When your positive mind is sharpest, you can see that all good comes from the Creator and that all beings have access to this good, which makes everyone equal.
When the positive mind is weak, it finds data from the subconscious and magnifies it. It will find your hidden traumas, blow them out of proportion, and reinforces negativity. A weak 3rd body can lead to a blocked navel center, making you sluggish, overweight, depressed and unorganized. In extreme cases, you can become paralyzed with negativity and feel like giving up entirely. A 3rd body that is too strong can lead people to become rail thin and dogmatic." -Check out more on the positive mind here

It is safe to say that when we strengthen the positive mind it can benefit us in every aspect of life. Who wouldn't want to live a happier and more uplifted life? Well, that is exactly what we can begin to experience when we strengthen our positive mind! It makes us more open to the possibilities of life and allows us into a space where we are flowing with the natural changes life brings.

When we strengthen the positive mind we are more resilient of falling into depression, fear, and anxiety. Our self esteems rise and we have a projection of confidence that flows from us naturally. To strengthen the positive mind practice the kriya I suggested for overcoming the negative mind or -check out this meditation for the positive mind here

4. Neutral (Meditative) Mind

" It’s attributes are compassion, service, and balance.
The neutral mind is like a scale. It balances and weighs the information being offered to it by the positive mind (what could go right?) and the negative mind (what could go wrong?). It rises above agenda and the details of the world to give a more neutral and yet compassionate determination of your best path. Strong neutral minds can evaluate and determine the best course within 9 seconds. A weak neutral mind means that you are at the mercy of the dueling positive and negative minds…you will be changeable, have trouble making up your mind, get involved in a mental war with yourself, and be at the mercy of a roller coaster of emotions. The neutral mind slows that process down and allows you to come from an objective, compassionate and devotional place.
One of the biggest gifts of the neutral mind is that it allows you to see everything that has happened to you (good or bad) in terms of blessings and gifts. Obstacles become opportunities and you can see the blessings in all. If you are stuck in a place of grief and sadness with a β€œwhy me?” mentality, you could benefit from strengthening the 4th body." -Check out more on the neutral mind here

We are in tune with your neutral mind when our conscious awareness is on the breath. Practicing meditation daily is a great way to strengthen the neutral mind. Also bring conscious awareness to the breath many times throughout the day is useful. When we strengthen the neutral mind we have more ability to act upon the inner wisdom within us.
-[Here is a kriya for you to practice to strengthen the neutral mind]

5. The Physical Body

"The physical body is our playground in this lifetime. It can hear, see, touch, taste and move. It wiggles and waggles, walks and run, jumps and reclines. It allows us to feel emotions and to interact with a physical experience.
When we don’t take care of our physical body or fifth body, everything suffers. If we eat too much of a food that isn’t good for us, we feel bad. This limits the ability of our other 9 bodies to function properly. If we eat too little, we don’t have enough gas to get us through the day. How we relate to our physical body is extremely important. We need to exercise to keep it strong (which is turn gets the prana flowing and the helps balance the mind), we must give it adequate rest, and we need to honor its role in our lives. Try hating your body but having everything else go right for you….you can’t do it. A positive relationship with strong physical body is a key to creating a whole and happy life.
A strong fifth body allows one to have a strong sense of balance and living for others. This might seem paradoxical, but a strong 5th center allows you maintain and feel your true balance while giving of yourself and your time. If someone needs your help and you think β€œI’m too tired!”, then you are out of balance in the 5th body. Taking the time to care for your physical body will allow you to give of yourself to others when called upon without feeling put upon or drained." -Check out more on the physical body here

The physical body has to be in balance in order for us to find balance in all of the other bodies. This body is how we stay grounded to the earth and utilize the power within all the other bodies. Without a healthy physical body it is basically impossible to be healthy in all our other bodies. The physical body is the first place we should always start when we are trying to create balance and truly awaken ourselves on a conscious level. This body is our gateway to everything.

How do we create and maintain a physical healthy body? Well, we must eat foods that are nutrient dense and healthy for us. We must also exercise daily. Simple enough, right? Give yourself a consistent routine that you can manage whether it be 10 minutes or 2 hours. It doesn't matter. At least be doing something that you can grow off of. Optimally I find it is best to do yoga first thing in the morning and then also do some form of exercise right before bed.
