“Maya, wait!” Royal said, the smile dropping from her face.

Maya gulped, and began mentally counting down from five. At one, she pushed the gas pedal.

Royal quickly dashed out the way as the truck began to move.

Mr. and Mrs. Blue looked up just in time to see Maya making her way out of the parking lot. Teal looked out at them puffed up cheeks and trempling lips from the passenger window.

Both parents paused in shock.

Mr. Blue whipped his head to Mrs. Blue. “Was that Maya driving my truck!?”

“With Teal and True in the passenger seat!?” Mrs. Blue’s Face crumbled. “No! Maya can’t drive! And definitely not with Teal! She’s a baby!” She took deep breaths frantically and put a hand to her heart.

After one deep growl leading up to a thundering bark, Bear backed up and did his best to squeeze out of his collar. Then he sped after the truck at the side of the road.

Royal zipped after him as fast as a hungry cheetah. “Wait! Wait! Maya!” She yelled. She ran with her heart beating fast, praying that her Mom and Dad didn’t dash after her.

“ROYAL. BLUE!” Dad shouted at the top of his lungs. So loud that his voice shook.

“Oh no.” Royal whispered from the bottom of her lungs. She ran faster, catching up with Bear and the truck, which Maya was driving quite slowly. After hearing her father’s tone, Maya slowly picked up speed.

“Wait! Maya!” Royal reached out for the truck door.

“Wait up Maya, Royal and Bear are coming!” True tugged on her sister’s shoulder.

Maya drove stifly, her hands tremblimg as they held the wheel. “I’m not gonna stop becauese then Dad might catch us!” Maya leaned out the wimdow and yelled, “Royal, hurry up!”

Maya stayed at the slowest pace she would tolerate while True attempted to open the door for Royal and Bear. She strained for a few moments until Maya shoved her to the side and opened the door for her.

Bear quickally jumped in and Royal did as well, slipping as she climbed up the half-frozen steps. Maya pushed the gas pedal and went faster, finally.

“Next stop is the bridge. The boys better be there with Dyan.” Maya said sternly.

Royal, who was breathing fast said. “Let’s hurry up to that bridge! Dad is not happy!”

Mr. Blue managed to hear the two’s faded voices. “Bridge?” He repeated, then he gasped. “Lucy, they’re headed for the bridge!”

“What bridge!?” Mrs. Blue asked frantically, leaning towards Mr. Blue and waving her hands frantically.

“The bridge at the entrance to Dyan’s neighborhood! It’s a suspension bridge! It’ll collapse under a truck’s weight. We have to beat them there! Do you have the keys to the car!?”

Mrs. Blue wordlessly began swiping through all of her pockets. She yanked the keys out of her back pocket, but her hands were so shaky she dropped them onto the road. She leaned down to pick them up but Mr. Blue was faster.

Mr. Blue put a hand on Mrs. Blue's shoulder and looked deep into her wide, brownie-colored eyes. “Calm down, Lucy. We've got to keep calm in the situation. We just have to beat them to that bridge!”
