Living On The Edge

Along with the scenic view of the canal, plenty of narrow streets and lots of gondola boats that more or less remain forever in the minds of those who visit Venice, there are also some other things that I bet many observe from the first minutes spent in town.

One of these, makes reference to all the houses and buildings in general who are built basically on the water, having this one exceed the threshold pretty often, either we are speaking about houses of the locals or some of the few businesses which are standing still with the the test of time.

Actually, this is the aspect of Venice that made me open up my eyes and realize that a city which is so famous for the tourists who are more and more with every year, it also represents a different life for those who are still living in town.

A life which is not always good since a next day is never certain due to floods that happen from time to time, and also because of some studies that are showing quite clearly that Venice will disappear completely in a few years since it sinks a few more every day.

Obviously, we are talking about minimum sizes in terms of the level of water that is increased and captures the town, but with so many crazy things currently happening in this world from wars to global warming and what not, I think we can all agree that this aspect could change in a blink ad see Venice slowly being taken away by nature.

I actually had in plan to keep this post pretty short in terms of words as I feel that it deserve a moment of silence and just to admire the pictures that will say more than any sentences attached to this article, but after seeing @priyanarc's post a while ago still from Venice, this post kept popping in my head, making me both nostalgic but excited to manage to see so much while in Venice and being able to share it further on here.

I actually had previous experiences when seeing a place that for some reason seemed interesting for tourists, it was a pain for the locals so I do hope that more and more people out there who get to travel more often than the others, will start paying attention to all the details a place comes with, as life will never be that pink as most people tend seeing, even if we are speaking about such a beautiful location as Venice is.

And the comparison can often be quite noticeable if you keep your feet on the ground. A good example is the picture from above where tourists are having a good time while enjoying their gondola ride, but both the driver and the man behind this one are not sharing the same excitement. Most likely the one from behind was heading to work since there is no public transportation in Venice and cars are pretty rare also, the main way of transportation being via boat.

Other places I've seen during my trip in Venice:

more coming soon...
